Tuesday, July 28, 2026

Last night I went to bed at 10pm, took a little while to fall asleep, got up once at 11:45, again at 4am, fell back asleep quickly both times, finally waking/getting up at 6am before my 6:30 alarm.

According to my Fitbit, I got in 6,342 steps yesterday and last night I slept for 7 hours and 10 minutes for a sleep score of 80. (According to my Fitbit, it took me 23 minutes to fall asleep.)

I took a Didi to Unicentro mall for 20,800 pesos.

I arrived early enough to buy a banana (didn’t see the owner of the kiosk so I just left the 1,000 pesos change on his stand) and walk once around the mall.

I met Jose for breakfast in Parmessano where I had the egg casserole and Jose had the French toast.

We moved to the food court and to rip off the band-aid so to speak, I lost both games to Jose.

It was only 1:30 when I ordered a Didi to take me to Viva Envigado for 20,100 pesos.

My eyes were unusually tired today.

I had the granola with yogurt and fruits in Pergamino, bought 2 packages of trash bags in Dollar City and had a latte in a busy Urbania for about an hour.

While washing my hands in the Exito bathroom I noticed a young man come in with a t-shirt that said something like, “fisiotherapia” and when he was done doing his thing at the urinal, I asked if he spoke English. He did and confirmed he is a physical therapist. I asked him about my knee pain and he said it was most likely due to worn cartilage.

I printed our Airbnb and United flight confirmations in Auros and bought a few things in Exito before returning to the apt by taxi. When my taxi driver said “okey dokey” I thought he spoke English but that’s all he knew. 😊

I dropped off my stuff, picked up my English muffin order from Eduardo Madrid and bought a bag of milk in Ara.

I watched some news then started my pre-sleep reading and went to bed at my usual 10pm.

Monday, July 27, 2026

Last night I went to bed at 10pm, took quite a while to fall asleep, got up once at 11:30, fell back asleep quickly, woke up at 5am and got up at 5:45.

According to my Fitbit, I got in 7,385 steps yesterday and last night I slept for 6 hours and 10 minutes for a sleep score of 71. (According to my Fitbit, it took me an hour and 54 minutes to fall asleep.)

Well, we leave for Chicago a month from today so I’d better get busy renting a car.

I had a 35-minute (per Fitbit) nap after breakfast.

I left the apt at 9am and found Smarfit very busy but soon realized most of the crowd was leaving. I completed my workout including 10 minutes on the treadmill with a final heartrate of 128 bpm. (I still have knee pain on the first rep of the Leg Extension machine. )

I had a latte in Ganso y Castor for about 90 minutes and observed some flowers being delivered for Feria de los Flores.

I met a gringo named Randy, originally from Decatur, IL but most recently Sacramento. He’s 69 years old and is traveling the world looking for a place to retire. He does damage assessments for FEMA and he’s teaching ChatGPT Builder to do it so he can work as a private consultant in the near future. We exchanged phone numbers and he said he’ll return in December or January.

I left just after 11 and stopped in Eduardo Madrid and ordered English muffins for tomorrow, stopped in Ara and bought a pepino (cucumber) and returned to the apt.

I received an email from United Airlines of slight changes to our return from Chicago but no significant effect on us.

I ordered all 6 Step Method manuals and workbooks for $162.93 and had them sent to my ship forwarder in Florida.

I tried taking a nap after lunch but in the end just rested my eyes.

I left the apt at 2:15 and walked to Gardenia. I completed another page in my chess puzzles but got 6 wrong.   I played a 15’+10” game on Chess.com and checkmated my opponent in 27 moves. It was getting a little dark and windy as I left at 4:30.

I stopped in Ara and bought a few things Teresa asked me to pick up.

Teresa got a massage from Kelly from 6:45 to 7:45.

In the end we didn’t have any rain today.

I watched another episode of Falling Skies, The Chris Hayes Show, then started my pre-sleep reading routine.

Sunday, July 26, 2026

Last night I went to bed at 10pm, fell asleep quickly, slept through the night, finally waking up at 5:45 and getting up with Teresa at 7am. 😊

According to my Fitbit, I got in 2,598 steps yesterday and last night I slept for 7 hours and 34 minutes for a sleep score of 83.

We left the apt at 11am, picked up MT and were dropped off at Estacion Exposiciones for 12,600 pesos. The entire entrance to the metro station was closed off by drywall so we had to walk a block south to catch an El Retiro bus. While sitting in the back next to a window a young man outside handed me a Bon Bon Bum (like a Tootsie Roll Pop) and since it was strawberry I didn’t refuse and gave him all my change, probably about 1,500 pesos.

We soon left, traffic was good and we arrived in El Retiro in about an hour.

We walked up to the park to Lomo Fino and only 3 others were waiting ahead of us for a table.

The ladies had the chicken breast and I had the solomito for a total of 184,000 pesos ($57). As usual the center of my steak was a little rarer than I prefer so I just ate the rest with my usual Coke.

We moved down the street to Café El Retiro and pretty much had our choice of tables. (Some tables have stools instead of chairs which I find hard on my back.)

I won a close game against chesswiz98, in the endgame, increasing my rating to 1535.

We all had coffee, I had a slice of carrot cake (not as good as previously) and the ladies shared a slice of some other type of cake.

We left at 4:45, walked back down the hill to the bus station and soon were on a bus back to Medellin. There’s always a line of taxis at the station; we dropped off MT at her apt and continued on to our place for 28,000 pesos. I stopped in Ara to buy milk before returning to the apt.

I watched another episode of Falling Skies before starting my pre-sleep reading routine.

Saturday, July 25, 2026

Last night I went to bed at 10pm, quickly fell asleep, and didn’t wake up until 6am so I slept all night. 😊

According to my Fitbit, I got in 6,825 steps yesterday and last night I slept for 6 hours and 43 minutes for a sleep score of 82.

I was planning on going to Viva Envigado for coffee but Teresa wants to go later to El Tesoro mall.

Teresa asked if her mother could go with us and I said, “fine”.

At 12:30 I ordered a Didi to pick us up, then her mother, then take us to El Tesoro. The app looked for drivers, and even though I increased the fare twice it still couldn’t find any takers. I told Teresa and she thought it was because of Feria de los Flores. I suggested we switch to Santafe mall and again I raised the fare twice but no takers. I cancelled that request and we ended up walking to Otra Parte and having lunch there. They changed their menu and Teresa ordered for both of us what I thought was the menu of the day but when the check of 148,593 pesos came, I found out it was all ala carte. 34,259 pesos each for chicken, pasta and salad; 17,593 each for soup; 10,185 each for juice, plus tip.

I thought we would go to Gardenia for coffee after but Teresa was tired and I was too warm in my hiking pants and t-shirt (I thought we would be going higher in the hills to El Tesoro) so we just returned to the apt.

I started watching a new (for me) series on Netflix, Falling Skies (7.1).

Teresa left at 5:30 to meet with her mother and Daniel but I didn’t feel like going out.

Friday, July 24, 2026

Last night I went to bed at 10pm, took quite a while to fall asleep, made a trip to the bathroom at 12:30, woke up at 6am and got up with Teresa at 7:15.

According to my Fitbit, I got in 4,081 steps yesterday and last night I slept for 7 hours and 9 minutes for a sleep score of 77.

I had a short nap after breakfast.

I left the apt just before 9am and found a very busy Smartfit. I completed my usual workout without much change to my order including 10 minutes on the treadmill with a final heartrate of 117bpm.

The street construction has now moved to the other side of Ave Poblado. They have a large machine which strips off the top few inches of blacktop and throws it over the cab into a waiting dump truck.

I had a latte in Ganso y Castor for a little over an hour. Teresa called and asked me to pick up Fab in Ara on the way back to the apt. When I was at the cashier to pay for it the bag of Fab was 30,400 pesos but I only had 30mil with me. I guess my credit wasn’t any good and I was about to get a smaller bag when the woman in line behind me paid the 400 pesos. That was nice of her!

I had a short nap after breakfast.

We left the apt at 3:30 and walked to Clinica Las Vegas Auna across the street from Otra Parte. While Teresa visited with a cancer patient she knows I went to the café and had a latte and a cookie. I went through another page of 12 puzzles and can’t believe I got 5 of them wrong.

Teresa joined me a couple hours later then she had a latte with a slice of carrot cake. We left at 6:45 and returned to the apt.

I started watching The Silence (5.4) on Netflix even though I’ve probably seen it before.

Btw, the photo of Rebel yesterday – he’s also in charge of security. 😊

Thursday, July 23, 2026

Last night I went to bed at 10pm, fell asleep quickly, was awakened by an explosion at 1:15 which turned out to be lightning (and it was raining), made a trip to the bathroom at 4:45 and got up with Teresa at 7am.

According to my Fitbit, I got in 5,732 steps yesterday and last night I slept for 6 hours and 19 minutes for a sleep score of 73.

It’s a cooler than usual day, very overcast with a few sprinkles.

I left the apt at 8:45 and walked to the mall. I bought a large carton of eggs and took them to a table in Urbania. (In Exito I saw the new type of oranges are Naranja Tangelo.)

I had a latte while completing another page in my Step 3 puzzle book, getting 4 out of 11 wrong.   I played a speed chess game on Chess.com losing in 99 moves. No, that’s not a typo.

I left at 11:15 and upstairs in Cine Colombia purchased an IMAX ticket for The Odyssey for next Thursday afternoon at 2:30 for 8,000 pesos (less than $3).

I returned to the apt by taxi.

I received a message that my MagicJack account will be expiring on August 7th. I went to renew it but my account contains an old debit card and I didn’t see any way to change it.

AJ with her brother, Rebel.

About 2:30 I was ready to go to Gardenia for coffee when a downpour started. Instead, I took a nap but didn’t sleep much.

I see my favorite cartoon when I was a kid will soon be a full length feature film.

I didn’t hear anything but it looks like there was some type of motorcycle accident below us in the street.

I finished watching the series His & Hers (surprise ending) then the news and reading before bed.

More rain in the evening and still dripping when I went to bed at 10pm.

Wednesday, July 22, 2026

Last night I went to bed at 10pm, fell asleep quickly, got up once at 2:15, finally waking at 5:15 and getting up at 6:30.

According to my Fitbit, I got in 5,732 steps yesterday and last night I slept for 6 hours and 21 minutes for a sleep score of 78.

I had a 45-minute nap after breakfast.

I left for Smartfit just before 9am. Today I confirmed the new building next to the gym is an Ara. At least they have some of their own parking but I’ll bet customers will occasionally use the parking on the other side of Smartfit. I completed my workout including 10 minutes on the treadmill with a final heartrate of 125bpm although I did have some discomfort in my right hip area for the last 5 minutes.

I had a latte (and a banana) outside Ganso y Castor for an hour before returning to the apt. I noticed a small group of about 6 men all dressed in black with the same logo on their shirts and carrying drums, a saxophone and trumpet standing nearby.

Just before 10am another ten or so, including two women showed up and they all moved south towards Parva.

The Steps Method, info@chess-steps.com, finally got back to me with the answer key for the chess puzzles. It turns out I have a Mix book on the Basic book so I asked them what the difference is.

I left at 11am and returned to the apt, buying 5 apples in Ara on the way back.

I left the apt just after noon and took a Didi to Mayorca. Construction was better today but it’s becoming clearer that they are building a bridge over the existing traffic circle. (That bridge is going to have to clear the two pedestrian walkways that exist between the old part and new part of the mall.)

I printed yesterday’s chess games plus the answer key to all the Step 3 problems.

Teresa soon joined me in Il Forno. She had her usual salmon with some green juice and I had the lasagna with a mango juice. The total check came to 130,893 pesos ($44). The cashier had already entered it in dollars instead of pesos which I calculate cost me about $3.50.

We stopped in Dollar City so Teresa could buy a snack (cookies) for her friends at the cultural center.

We took a taxi which dropped her off down the hill from the center then dropped me off down the block from La Buena Mesa. I had a latte outside Los Porteños while checking my chess puzzle answers and, yes, I got a few wrong.

I observed the same group in black that I saw this morning getting into a nearby van.

I left at 4:30 and returned to the apt.

I checked Cine Colombia and The Odyssey is playing in Viva Envigado’s IMAX tomorrow at 11am, 2:30, and 6pm.

I started watching the limited series His & Hers (7.1) on Netflix.

My eyes felt great today. Was it because I had a nap after breakfast or more likely because the rain cleaned the pollution out of the air?

Tuesday, July 21, 2026

Last night I went to bed at 10pm (still drizzling lightly), fell asleep quickly, got up once at 1:45 (no longer raining), finally waking/getting up by alarm at 6:30.

According to my Fitbit, I got in 6,452 steps yesterday and last night I slept for 7 hours and 32 minutes for a sleep score of 80.

I ordered a Didi to take me to Unicentro mall for 21,600 pesos. I arrived early enough to eat a banana and walk once around the mall.

I met Jose in Parmessano where I had 2 scrambled eggs con hogao, 4 small Italian sausages, sourdough bread with marmalade and a latte for 47,000 pesos.

I had the Black pieces in the first game and got up a pawn but mismanaged the endgame and it ended as a 66-move draw.

I had the White pieces in the second game and had him tied up on the queenside and I even had a pawn one square from queening but couldn’t find a way to proceed and it ended as a 49-move draw.

It was 2:15 when I ordered a Didi to take me to Viva Envigado for 17,800 pesos. Traffic was good for a change and I arrived in only 25 minutes.

I had the teriyaki chicken in Sarku’s but by the time I finished it was too late for coffee so I walked to Eduardo Madrid and bought 5 sesame seed bagels before returning to the apt.

The guy renting our parking spot stopped by and gave me 300mil for July-September.

I’ve been taking this Joint Support supplement

for years but recently saw this article about glucosamine

I didn’t stop taking it completely but limited it to M/W/F mornings. Within a few weeks I noticed a difference: I had to prep my leg joints before standing up because they felt so stiff. I went back to taking Joint Support every morning and they feel normal again.

Teresa came to me with a note that Laura is having a scattering ceremony for Vicky’s ashes tomorrow. I asked her we’re going to go up high in the mountains to Laura’s finca, scatter some ashes then return to our apt? Will that be before or after lunch? Teresa wanted to go there by bus until she found out it was to be at 10am; now she wants to go on a different day. Not sure how that’s going to work out.

I suggested to ChatGPT that I go back to taking a full sleeping pill each night. It reminded me of my cold and other off-schedule things and suggested I stick to the half tablet regimen a while longer and see if my sleep improves.

I watched some news then started my pre-sleep routine.

Last night I went to bed at 10:15, took a while to fall asleep, got up once at 1:15 (it was raining), woke up at 6:15, couldn’t fall back asleep, finally getting up at 7:15.

According to my Fitbit, I got in 1,358 steps yesterday and last night I slept for 6 hours and 10 minutes for a sleep score of 73.

So much for not having any rain. 😊

Today is another holiday here – it’s Colombian Independence Day!

Chesswiz98 resigned our latest game on the 54th move increasing my rating to 1519.

We left the apt at 12:30 and took a Didi to Arkadia mall. (An overhead road sign said there is a high probability for rain in the afternoon in Medellin.) After a short wait in line, we had lunch in Crepes & Waffles for 106,300 pesos ($33). Teresa checked out H&M but didn’t find anything. Outside, the street was wet so obviously there was a little rain while we were inside.

We went across the street to Pricesmart where we purchased 775,601 pesos of groceries including 144,900 pesos to renew our membership. Sadly, they didn’t have Butterball turkey breasts today.

We returned to the apt by taxi for 22,000 pesos.

I won a game vs chesswiz98 in 14 moves (I either checkmate him or he loses his queen) increasing my rating to 1526.

I tried one of the new oranges but it’s not the same, not as easy to peel and not as sweet.

I finished season 3 of Quarterback then watched 23,000 Lives both on Netflix.

We had some rain in the evening. It was still drizzling lightly when I went to bed at 10pm.

Sunday, July 19, 2026

Last night I went to bed at 10pm, fell sleep quickly, woke up at 5:30, couldn’t fall back asleep, finally getting up at 6:15.

According to my Fitbit, I got in 5,021 steps yesterday and last night I slept for 6 hours and 34 minutes for a sleep score of 76.

I turned on my VPN but only was able to access my library after I changed the US default location from Miami to Chicago.

Yesterday I was calculating when to go for my next haircut and realized we leave for our trip in 40 days so I’ll be having my next couple of haircuts every 3 weeks.

After breakfast I went back to bed for almost 2 hours.

We left the apt at 12:30 and took a Didi to an almost empty El Correo in Provenza. Teresa had her usual chicken while I had their ribs. Their ribs and the sauce are pretty good but their fries are amazing. We each ate just over half our food and got the rest to go for our supper tonight. We returned to the apt by Didi arriving just in time for the “kickoff”. (Our Didi driver insisted that Spain was going to win.)

About 2:30 Teresa got a call from our portero that Marcos was in the porteria for me. I wasn’t about to leave the game and later I learned he was there with his son and twin grandchildren. He didn’t have his cellphone with him so I wasn’t able to contact him right away. I understand they leave tomorrow for Cartagena.

The championship game was pretty boring (not like yesterday’s 6-4 score) with Spain winning 1-0 on a late goal.

I watched a couple more episodes of season 3 of Quarterback on Netflix. In this latest episode, featuring Joe Flacco, Cincinnati had just scored a touchdown against the Bears with 50 seconds left. Caleb Williams got them to midfield then threw a dime to tight end Colston Loveland at the 20 and he ran it in for the Bears win. 😊 (NFL training camp starts in a couple weeks.)

It’s been a month since we’ve had any rain so I guess we are in a summer period here.

Friday, July 17, 2026

Last night I went to bed at 10pm, fell sleep quickly, woke up once at 3:30, finally waking/getting up just before 7am.

According to my Fitbit, I got in 6,433 steps yesterday and last night I slept for 7 hours and 58 minutes for a sleep score of 78.

Teresa was just leaving for the gym so I’ll have to wait until she returns for my breakfast and then I’ll head to the gym.

Strange thing. I had the TV on and I muted a program but when I returned the remote control didn’t work. I even changed the batteries and still none of the buttons worked. I re-paired it with the ONN device and all is good again.

Teresa returned at 8:15 and made breakfast.

She told me she’s going back to the Expo in Plaza Mayor with Narcelly (sp?) so I’ll be on my own for lunch today.

I left the apt at 9am and found Smartfit not so busy but still had to switch the order of a couple early machines. I completed 10 minutes on the treadmill with a final heartrate of 122bpm.

On my way to Ganso y Castor a bus was stalled right at the bottleneck on Ave Poblado and everyone had to divert down a side street towards our complex.

I had a latte in Ganso y Castor for a little over an hour before returning to the apt.

Teresa informed me she’s not going to Plaza Mayor after all and I took that opportunity to inform her I’m not going to El Retiro or any other place Sunday because it’s the World Cup final.

I left the apt at 2pm, reprinted my chess games from Tuesday and had a latte in Los Porteños while going through another page of puzzles. I also played another game of speed chess online at 15’+30” and won without much difficulty.

I met Teresa at the library at 4:30 and we went down and across the street to Picositas where Teresa had a seafood casserole and I had a chicken empanada and a pineapple juice. (Note to self: don’t order juices here because they aren’t fresh.)

We returned to the apt and I finished reading Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swann’s Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump.

I watched some news and went to bed at 10pm.

Last night I went to bed at 10:15, fell sleep quickly, woke up several times during the night but just rolled over and went back to sleep, finally waking at 6am and getting up with Teresa at 6:30.

According to my Fitbit, I got in 2,477 steps yesterday and last night I slept for 6 hours and 40 minutes for a sleep score of 75.

Marcos texted me we won’t be meeting this morning because he fell yesterday and is still a little sore. (Sheesh, all my friends are getting old.)

Annie James is 10 months old today.

I left the apt at 8am and walked to the mall. I saw the blue eggs in Exito again and this time took this photo.

I bought a medium size package of eggs and took a seat in Urbania. For the first time, when I had to make a quick trip to the restroom, I left all my stuff at my table. It was still there when I returned. 😊 I left at 11am and returned to the apt.

After lunch I had a short nap but didn’t sleep much.

At 2pm I picked up our package which contained 4 bottles of leg tan spray for Teresa, a bottle of Blink gel drops for my eyes,  Jesus de la Villa’s 50 Mistakes You Should Know (in chess), and 3 step method books for practicing tactics.

I went to Gardenia and completed the first page of puzzles in the Step 3 workbook. Now I need to find the answers to check them.

I left at 5pm and returned to the apt.

I finished the movie, Weapons on Stremio.

I listened to the president’s address which started at 8pm. (He’s doing everything he can to stay out of jail.)

Wednesday, July 15, 2026

Last night I went to bed at 10pm, felt I didn’t sleep all night, got up once to pee at 3:15, finally getting up at 6:30.

According to my Fitbit, I got in 5,445 steps yesterday and last night I slept for 4 hours and 7 minutes for a sleep score of 53.

After breakfast I returned to bed for 3 ½ hours but Fitbit says I only slept for about an hour but I still felt much better.

Of course, I skipped gym today but I did do a few exercises later with my 7# dumbbell.

I received an email our package has been released from Bogota and is on its way here.

I took a Didi to Mayorca and met Teresa in Crepes & Waffles where we had lunch for 108,900 pesos ($36). Only unusual thing is the waitress charged my debit card in USD instead of COP. Teresa discussed something with her then passed on to me that two other gringos asked for USD earlier this week. I said, then they’re idiots, but I didn’t say that to the waitress.

Downstairs in Exito we saw boxes of blue eggs, they’re light blue but there’re still blue. Teresa didn’t trust this novelty, so we bought a small box of white eggs and I’ll buy more tomorrow in Mercado Madrid. Teresa spent about 20 minutes talking to the cashier about her Exito points then we returned to the apt by taxi.

I watched the last half of Argentina’s 2-1 win over England. I understand the championship Argentina vs Spain will be Sunday afternoon so I don’t plan on going to El Retiro that day.

Teresa left at 4:15 for another mass for Vicky, this time in Laureles. I ordered a Didi to take her there for 20,600 pesos.

I started watching a new movie, Weapons (7.4) on Stremio, then a little news before starting my pre-sleep reading routine. I went to bed at 10:15 and I thought I heard Teresa return at 10:30.

Last night I went to bed at 10pm, slept through the night, finally waking/getting up just before my 6:30 alarm.

According to my Fitbit, I got in 4,693 steps yesterday and last night I slept for 7 hours and 51 minutes for a sleep score of 79.

At 7:15 I started ordered the Didi to take me to Unicentro mall for 15,300 pesos. I arrived early enough to buy a banana and walk twice around the mall.

We had our usual breakfast in Parmessano then moved to the food court.

I had the Black pieces in the first game and Jose found 2 different tactics in the middlegame and I resigned on move 29. That only took 90 minutes.

I had the White pieces in the second game and I found a tactical combination on my 43rd move but he played on, testing my endgame skills, and I checkmated him on the 67th move.

It was only 1:15 when we said goodbye and I started the process of ordering my ride to Viva Envigado for 26,100 pesos.

I had my usual chicken teriyaki in Sarku’s while Spain was beating France in the World Cup semifinals.

Downstairs I paid for my cellphone plan in Claro, withdrew 2,000,000 pesos from a Davivienda ATM (all 100s), deposited 110,000 pesos in a consignacion ATM for Innovation Corp, then in Exito waited in a slow line to pay our epm bill. By then it was too late for coffee so I just bought toilet paper and returned to the apt by taxi.

I finished the first season of Little House on the Prairie. It was okay but there were lots of times it moved slowly. I watched some news then started my pre-sleep reading routine.

Monday, July 13, 2026

Last night I went to bed at 10pm, got up once at 2:15, finally waking/getting up at 7am.

According to my Fitbit, I got in 3,754 steps yesterday and last night I slept for 7 hours and 42 minutes for a sleep score of 79.

Today is another holiday here, Day of Our Lady of Chiquinquira, whatever that is.

I took a 45-minute nap after breakfast although that meant I wasn’t able to leave for Smartfit until 9:30. It was as busy as usual but I completed my usual workout including 10 minutes on the treadmill.

I had a latte outside Ganso y Castro for an hour. I caught this photo of the squirrel eating the peanut I left for it.

I had another nap after lunch.

We left the apt at 3pm for Plaza Mayor for 15,600 pesos. The general entrance fee was only 24,000 pesos. Teresa walked around checking out the wares and I generally stood nearby checking my phone. She commented that there seemed to be lots of new things that would take 2-3 days to see everything. I thought it was the same stuff as last year and the year before that and if she thinks this place is big then she needs to see McCormick Place in Chicago.

There were a couple of places for coffee, interestingly Al Alma and a Urbania but seating was limited.

We had a few snacks while there and Teresa had brought a thermos of water for us to share.

We left at 6:15, just before it got dark, and returned to the apt by Didi for 15,600 pesos.

I watched another episode of House on the Prairie, some news, my pre-sleep reading and went to bed at 10pm.

Sunday, July 12, 2026

Last night I went to bed at 11:15, felt like I was in a light sleep, finally waking/getting up at 7am.

According to my Fitbit, I got in 5,154 steps yesterday and last night I slept for 7 hours and 24 minutes for a sleep score of 81.

We left the apt at 11:15, picked up MT at her apt and were dropped off at the Exposiciones metro station. We only had a 5-minute wait for the next bus. The trip to El Retiro usually takes an hour and 15 minutes but add 15 minutes for this holiday weekend and another 15 minutes because of construction on Las Palmas. Anyway, we arrived in El Retiro by 1:15.

We walked up to Lomo Fino and got in a short but slow line.

When we finally got a table, I ordered my usual solomito with a Coke and the ladies had chicken with a juice and shared a bowl of soup. The total came to 187,000 pesos ($56.50).

While they went for a walk in the park I went straight down to El Retiro Café and ordered a latte from a young man that spoke good English. When the ladies joined me, Teresa ordered a coffee with ice cream and, instead of ordering a granizado, that’s what she got, a dish of ice cream with coffee on the side. 😊

We left at 4:15 and it was a short wait for the next bus to return us to Medellin.

I watched another episode of House on the Prairie on Netflix before starting my pre-sleep reading and went to bed at 10pm.

Saturday, July 11, 2026

Last night I went to bed at 9:30, got up once at 6am to pee, finally waking/getting up by alarm at 7:30.

According to my Fitbit, I got in 5,949 steps yesterday and last night I slept for 9 hours and 17 minutes for a sleep score of 85.

Teresa wants to go to an expo today in Plaza Mayor.

I left the apt at 9:45, paid the Movistar bill at the Gana kiosk and stopped in Eduardo Madrid but they didn’t have any bagels.

Los Porteños was very busy so I had a latte outside Ganso y Castor.

I swung by Eduardo Madrid on my way back to the apt and they had a 5-pak of poppy seed bagels that I promptly purchased.

Teresa wanted to go to an expo in Plaza Mayor until she learned there were long lines. I told her it would be better if we went during the week.

Teresa wanted to go somewhere different this afternoon but couldn’t come up with any ideas. Late in the afternoon I suggested I go to that bakery near Aymara and buy the pastry she likes. I left the apt at 3pm and had a latte outside Los Porteños until 4:15 then stopped at the bakery and bought 2 pastel de guayaba to go for a little less than 9,000 pesos.

I watched the first episode of Little House on the Prairie (6.9; 2026-).

I was watching the England vs Norway match when they scanned to Magnus Carlsen sitting in the stands. Not only is he a chess Grandmaster and chess champion, but has the highest every chess rating in history.

In the evening there was a knock at our door. Now, the only people who knock on our door are: 1) a portero bringing our epm bill, 2) the guy who rents our parking space coming to pay for the coming 3 months, 3) kids playing games who knock on our door then run. It turned out to be #1 with an epm bill of 417,260 pesos.

I stayed up to watch Argentina beat Switzerland 3-1 in extra time, finally getting to bed at 11:15.

Friday, July 10, 2026

Last night I went to bed at 10pm, got up once at 2:30 to pee, finally waking/getting up with Teresa at 6:15.

According to my Fitbit, I got in 3,987 steps yesterday and last night I slept for 7 hours and 10 minutes for a sleep score of 83.

Teresa informed me there’s an expo fair at Playa Mayor she wants to visit this afternoon.

I had a 30-minute nap after breakfast.

I left the apt at 8:45 and found Smartfit much busier than usual but it eased off by 9:15. I completed my workout including 10 minutes on the treadmill.

On my way to Ganso y Castor workers are redoing the sidewalk along Ave Poblado.

I had a latte for an hour before returning to the apt, buying white vinegar in Ara on the way.

Teresa informed me Plaza Mayor Will have to wait until tomorrow as she’s going to meet Lucy this afternoon to show her how to work on a new more complicated purse she’s working on.

I had a 45-minute nap after lunch.

We left the apt at 2:15 and walked to the Otra Parte library where we met up with Lucy. They took a table in the corner and I took a more comfortable plastic webbed chair nearby. I just went through my phone and played a couple of speed chess games, losing both.

We left at 5:30 and returned to the apt.

I watched the movie The Others (7.6) on Stremio.

Netflix offered to upgrade me from 1080p to 4K for 44,900 a month, which I accepted.

After a little pre-sleep reading my eyes were more tired than usual so I went to bed at 9:30.

Thursday, July 9, 2026

Last night I went to bed at 10pm, woke up briefly but didn’t get up at 5am, finally waking/getting up with Teresa at 6:45.

According to my Fitbit, I got in 5,341 steps yesterday and last night I slept for 7 hours and 18 minutes for a sleep score of 83.

I had a short nap after breakfast.

AJ practicing her standing.

I met Marcos at Tostao at 9:30. Both he and Johana have colds. His son arrives next Saturday with his grandsons then a couple days later they leave for Cartagena.

I stopped in Mercado Madrid and bought a few groceries before returning to the apt.

We left the apt at 3am and walked to Gardenia where we had coffee and eventually shared their 3 Mini Burgers which are filled with pulled pork. Teresa didn’t seem to appreciate the dark bread this time.

They had the World Cup on and France defeated Morocco 2-0.

Teresa left at 5pm for a gym class and I left about 30 minutes later.

I have a list of movies with supposedly “shocking endings”. I started going through since I finished The Handmaid’s Tale. None of them are on Netflix, couldn’t find a couple and rejected a few. Today I watched The Mist (7.1) on Stremio and yes, it had a surprise ending.

Wednesday, July 8, 2026

Last night I went to bed at 10:30, woke up at 6:30, and got up with Teresa at 7am.

According to my Fitbit, I got in 5,049 steps yesterday and last night I slept for 6 hours and 38 minutes for a sleep score of 80. Obviously, somehow, Fitbit distinguishes between sleep quality and sleep quantity.

Yeah, I think my cold is over. 😊

I laid down and closed my eyes for about 30 minutes.

I left the apt at 9am and found Smartfit as busy as usual. I completed my workout (machines now at -10#) including 10 minutes on the treadmill with a final heartrate of 122 bpm.

I had a latte in Ganso y Castor for about an hour. I stopped in Eduardo Madrid and bought 3 poppy seed bagels for 10,500 pesos. I stopped in Ara and bought a bag of whole milk for 4,200 pesos before returning to the apt.

It’s 86 degrees here at 11:45am so maybe we will have a summer this year.

Teresa called and asked me to meet her at 1:30 in Santafe mall to have lunch with her friend Monica.

I took a Didi to Santafe mall and upstairs had yesterday’s chess games printed.

We had lunch in Crepes & Waffles for 103,350 pesos ($31). We went down to Valentina’s where we had coffee but Monica never showed up. As we were leaving the parking garage in a taxi Teresa pointed out a Decathalon store that had taken over the old taxi waiting area. It can’t be very big.

Back at the apt I tried watching a movie named The Departed and even though there were lots of stars I soon tired of all the profanity and the heavy Boston accent.

AJ standing up for the first time:

Well, I guess my cold isn’t quite done with me yet.
