Wednesday, July 31st, 2013

I went to bed at 10:45, got up twice during the night at 2am and 5:30, finally getting up at 6:40.

I studied the spelling of the words I’ve been missing and I think I may have figured out my “ie” vs “ei” problem.  Let’s see if I can improve on my 72% highest score this morning.  Well, that time I only registered 56%.  I know I can improve on that score.  That time I got 78% and I know I can do better.  I need to get to 90% to proceed to the next lesson.

Interesting, now RS is taking me to a new lesson – Unit 3 Lesson 2 on Vocabulary.   So far it’s covering a lot of what I already know – words in Spanish for year, month, week, and day, and the days of the week.

Martha stopped by to take a look at the problem I’m having with the balcony door.  She also tried to tell me about why they don’t have an answer yet to the “bonging” I keep hearing: “no lo pude llamar porque deje el telefono el numero en el maletin de las herramientas que tenemos en la terraza.” which translated to “I could not leave the phone call because the number in the briefcase of the tools we have on the terrace.”
She also had some information for me about their annual Festival of Flowers which according to my Colombia guide is from July 28th to August 7th: “Estamos en las fiestas delas flores se realiza muchos programas por toda la ciudad para diferentes custos metase a la direccion www.medellin.go.com alli encuentra la programacion el 7 de agosto dia de fiesta y por el exito por toda la 80 passa el desfile de los carros antiguos.” which translated to “We are at parties delas flowers takes many programs throughout the city for different custos be immersed in the direction there is the programming www.medellin.go.com August 7th day of celebration and success throughout the 80 passa the parade of old cars.”

I asked her if she has an old car “tu viejo carro?” and she said “yes” so she probably has a car in the parade.  I asked her where and she said “Exito” so I’m guessing if you stand in front of the mall on the right day at the right time you will see the parade.  I’ll have to ask Beatriz about that – or maybe Jhon.  If there is anything important there that I missed I’ll have to wait until my brother provides me with a translation.

Now she’s the 3rd person I’ve known (Reina, Beatriz, Martha) that writes in mostly run on sentences only occasionally including commas instead of periods (Reina didn’t even bother to use commas which was why it was difficult to communicate with her).
I just checked www.medellin.go.com and the site doesn’t exist, however, as I was typing www.medellin.gov.com did come up so I must have been to that site before.  There is a place where you can click to get an English translation of the guide and then there’s a selection for Festival of Flowers.  The site says that the FoF is from August 2nd to the 11th and it looks like there are a lot of different activities in a lot of different places on a lot of different days.

I timed out on RS and when I logged back in it’s taking me to Unit 3 Lesson 3 on Grammar.  Oh boy!  Here’s a description of the English pictures I’m looking at…
I am writing.
She is eating.
We (men) are reading.
They (women) are drinking.

And here is how it is described in Spanish:
Yo estoy escribiendo.
Ella esta comiendo.
Nosotros estamos leyendo.
Ellas estan bebiendo.

Just before noon I walked down to Jhon’s office and talked to him a little bit.  Then I went to Viva and had a small Hambur dog and a small Pepsi at Dogger.  This “dog” was very different from the first one I had which was a large one.  Either a mistake was made one of the two times or a small one is very different from a large one.  Anyway, it cost a total of 7,400 ($3.89).

A young man I have seen before stopped at my table and we played a quick game without a clock.  I didn’t have much trouble beating him.

About 1:30 it starts to get hot there so I got a large Pepsi at Frisby.  The only problem is that later I’ll have to pee.  The only problem with that is I can’t leave anything there so I have to pack everything up, go to the restroom, and then come back and unpack everything.

2 boys and 2 girls stopped at my table and rattled off something in Spanish.  They seemed confused when I told them I don’t speak much Spanish.  I asked them if any of them spoke English and they all pointed to the same guy.  I could see his mind working trying to remember some English.  I asked him to sit down and we started to play a game of chess.  I was slaughtering him before I finally figured out that for a school project they had to ask people to define “happiness”.  Using sign language I conveyed to them that I would need a little time.  Finally, I told them “a good woman and a lot of money”.  They got a good laugh out of that but I think they agreed with me.  They asked me to write down my name and then they wanted to take a picture of all of us together.  That reminded me I had my iPad with me so I took a picture of them and then together with me.

After they left I realized I should have added “and good health”.

Dinner was the small shish kebab at SanJote.

When I got back to my apartment I looked in the garage to see if my book was here, it wasn’t, but on the stairs were 2 envelopes for me.  They were both pension deposit receipts, one for July 1st and the other for May 1st.  I guess one took 1 month and the other 3 months?

Beatriz came over about 6:30.  I asked her about the Festival of Flowers and we spent some time on the internet looking for information.  We got a phone number and she’s going to call tomorrow to get more detail.

We went for a walk for some ice cream but the place I had seen but never been to across from Likkes was closed.  And Almibar at Laureles Mall was closed so we went to Viva and we had yogurt ice cream at Mimo’s for 13,900.  This is the same place that’s in Golf Mill’s food court although there it is self serve and then you weigh the product.

Beatriz and I made a date for Friday night to go for pizza.  There’s a place called Piccolo’s on Avenida Nutibara that isn’t too far of a walk, in fact it’s almost right next door to McDonalds.

I see a couple of my pension deposits have been made so I have a little extra money in my account for tomorrow.

Tuesday, July 30th, 2013

I went to bed at 10:45, woke up twice at 2:20 and 4:15, and got up at 6:45 feeling pretty good.

Breakfast was a bowl of cereal with cold milk from the corner store.

Well, I’m repeating the Writing portion of RS and now my scores are improving step by step: 56%, 61%, 72%, 72%.  Uh-oh, have I reached a plateau?  Enough punishment for one day.  I’ll try again tomorrow.

Reina emailed me as to when I wanted her to come to the apartment to buy food for Angel.  I reminded her that one of the conditions of my being able to renew my lease was that she could not come to my apartment again.  We agreed to meet at Laureles Mall at 11am on Friday.  I should have my checking account replenished by then as it will be the 2nd of the month.

I took a nap from about 10-11am.

I met Jhon at his office at noon and we went for the 7mil ($3.68) lunch at Likkes.  The cute black girl was there to take our order.  Jhon was telling me the advantages of having a fat girlfriend.  “If you fall down you have somebody to grab to hold you up.  If you fall off the bed you have something to hold onto.”  I’m not sure if he’s serious although, like a lot of Colombian men, he talks about how he loves big-bottomed women.  Not in my taste, although I could never claim Beatriz has a small butt.   (Reina had a very nice little butt, but …)

At Laureles Mall I started erasing answers that I had written in pencil in my chess course.  Just before 2pm I got a large Pepsi from Frisby.  The guy who speaks almost perfect English served me.  As he was filling my cup, basically waiting for the foam to settle, I told him about how I like Root Beer as it does not have any caffeine.  Of course he had never heard of it.  I haven’t seen it here in Colombia at all.  Then I told him in Russia, if you fill the cup to the very top it means you love them.  Of course, he told me not to get the wrong idea.  He then repeated what I told him in Spanish for the ladies there and they all had a good laugh.

Just after I got back to my table Dario arrived.  We played the usual 2 games.  The first with black again I got myself into a very cramped position and he just slowly overwhelmed me with his offense.  I have to try to keep the game more wide open.  In the second game, I had black, and right away he got me out of my favorite opening.  I had been studying what the objective based on what he had done and I managed to get pretty quickly to the endgame with nothing but 6 pawns for him and 7 for me and 2 of his pawns were doubled.  I knew what I wanted to do to win the endgame but somehow I didn’t play it right and he locked up the pawns and we finally agreed to a draw.

He invited me to his apartment on Thursday at 1:30 and we might have a simultaneous against his chess club, who should be all beginners.

Before I left LM I stopped at Bunuelo Express and asked the woman working there how much would it be for 2 small packets of butter and she gave them to me for free.  I warned her I would be back again so I’m pretty sure at some point they will start charging me for it but that’s okay.  Now I have butter for my waffle and in the future for popcorn.

Dinner was a waffle – best one I’ve made yet.  I put a little less milk in so the batter would be thicker, cooked it for exactly 5 minutes and then put the butter on top before I even took it out of the waffle maker.  Yum!

A few kids are playing outside, not even in the street, exactly below me in the driveway.  Not sure what the attraction is exactly here but it’s still nice to have little ones around.

I plan to watch Extreme Weight Loss from 7-9pm on ABC via USTVNOW.

Monday, July 29th, 2013

I went to bed at 11:00, woke up at 2:20 for a trip to the bathroom, ditto at 4:10, and finally got up at 6:30 feeling pretty good.

For weeks now I’ve been receiving daily “matches” from match.com.  I’m matched to 60-70 year old women that live in northern California.  Either match.com entered my email address accidentally for someone else or someone is playing a joke on me.  Finally, I decided to get serious today about ending it.  I was going to call them but I had the inspiration that I could try to login to “my” account using my email address and then, since I don’t know the password, tell them “I forgot it” and to send it to me or reset it.  Right away I had the problem that when I entered www.match.com it kept redirecting me to co.match.com.  I then went to www.google.com and did a search on match.com and “match.com login” was one of the options.  That led me to the US match.com and I entered my email address and had them send me my password.  The password was 36022 – one I would never have used - and the Username “elliott36022”.  So I was finally able to unsubscribe.

According to a Note reminder on my iPad the chess book I ordered Chess Strategy for the Tournament Player should be arriving any day now because the check cleared 6 weeks ago on June 17th.

Wow.  I reached a new low in my Rosetta Stone scores.  Level 1 Unit 3 Lesson 1 is Writing and I only scored 28%.  I repeated it and only improved to 33%.  It might take me a while to get through this lesson.  For example, I hear a Spanish speaker say: "La nina tiene un libro pero no lo esta leyendo."  and then I have to write what they said and I get points depending on how accurate I am.  BTW, the letters I highlighted and underlined in that sentence have accent marks above them that I also have to get right.

I took a nap from 10:15 to 11:00am.

Just before noon I walked down to Jhon’s office.  I told him I was going to walk down to Avenida Nutibara and have lunch at McDonald’s for a change.  He decided he needed a change too so he joined me.  My plan was to just keep heading south and east until I hit Nutibara.  But I also wanted to show him the store where I bought my t-shirts.  That worked but we ended up about 2 blocks further southeast than we needed to be.  We each got the Big Mac Combo for 11,500 ($6.05).  I don’t often eat at McDonald’s so I don’t know if that is comparable with US prices or not.  It was much faster getting back to Laureles Mall (LM).  Oh, sorry bro, but I think the Blue Marlin restaurant isn’t open anymore.  In fact we walked a couple of blocks too far northwest so I think next time the quickest thing to do would be to just walk east from Laureles Mall until you come to Avenida Nutibara and then turn right.

To stay cool I had to have a large Pepsi at Frisby for 3,900 ($2.05) that I nursed for a couple hours.  Interestingly I noticed the tax on the Pepsi was only 8% so I guess not everything is taxed at 16%.

I left LM at 5pm and stopped at Exito and bought a box of cereal, a pencil eraser for a book I wrote in, and another package of Trident gum.  I stopped at Jhon’s office and we went for a drink at the corner store.  I just had a mango juice since it’s starting to get a little late in the day.  I asked Jhon if the store sold butter.  He showed me what they had – the smallest is what I would call a stick of butter.  I told him that I needed something smaller because I don’t have a refrigerator.  He told me I didn’t have to worry about that because what it contains won’t spoil.  Hmmm.  Well, at least that could be my butter for my waffles and popcorn.  I left at 6pm for home.

Dinner was a waffle using the leftover milk from this morning.

My plan is to watch The Bachelorette and Under the Dome tonight on USTVNOW.

Sunday, July 28th, 2013

I went to bed at 10:30 last night, woke up at 4:30 to use the toilet, and got up at 6:45.  I feel great!  Breakfast was the usual buffet at the Golden Palermo Hotel.  I always have a bowl of granola-like cereal, 2 cups of coffee, omelet or scrambled eggs, fresh fruit and a glass of fresh orange juice.  They also have toast, arepas, cheese, yogurt along with some other hot item I don't usually care for.

I spent a couple hours at Laureles Mall copying some new Spanish words into my booklet and studying the English, Botvinnik Attack - my usual chess opening when I’m playing the white pieces.

Back at the apartment I heard Martha upstairs so I brought her down to my apartment so she could listen to the “bonging” sound.  This was her (translated) reply:
I call the doctor and ask light under the phone I have her in the house today is Sunday porq bother me sad she's good neighbor and talk to marg to tell you has you spending.”

Doesn’t make much sense, does it?  What I saw her write in Spanish was “Doctora Luz Amparo”.  “Doctora” is a female doctor.  Luz Amparo is a woman’s name so that checks out although I don’t remember hearing that name before.  “Luz” is light in English so that’s why it translated that way.  I assume “porq” (which didn’t get translated) is porque and “marg” is supposed to be Margarita.
When I made those changes it translated to:

I call Dr. Luz Amparo and asked it I have the phone in the house today is Sunday I am sorry to bother because she is a good neighbor and talk to Margarita has to tell you that it happens.”

So, my best guess is she is going to get the phone number of the lady next door (Dr. Luz Amparo?) and ask her what the noise is.

Beatriz arrived about 1:15.  We went to Viva Mall and I took some money out of my checking account and we had lunch at Alfredo’s.  I had the lasagna and a coke for 10,900 and she had the ravioli, which was the special of the day, for only 6,900.  We then bought 21,580 ($11.36) worth of cleaning supplies at Exito and I gave Beatriz the points.

Back at the apartment she told me my broom (5 months old now?) was no good.  I gave her 20mil and she went somewhere and very quickly, like 5 minutes, returned with a new broom for about 7mil ($3.68).  I guess my apartment was pretty dirty as this is what she swept up from only the living room and dining room area:

An hour later the mop broke.  Well, it was 5 months old.  I gave her 10mil and she returned with a much nicer (she tells me) mop for 6mil.  She’s doing a real thorough job of cleaning this apartment.  An hour later and she’s cleaning the guest bedroom and she shows me a dead lizard about 2” long.  I wonder how long it’s been there?  Lol.

Wow!  The apartment is spotless.  I think she spent something like 5 hours on it.  I rewarded her by taking her for ice cream.  Unfortunately the ice cream store in Laureles Mall had just closed so we went over to Viva and next to Exito there is a small pastry & ice cream shop called Restcafe S.A.S where I had a single dip strawberry waffle cone and she had a double dip strawberry and vanilla waffle cone for a total of 7,900 ($4.16).

Saturday, July 27th, 2013

I went to bed at 11:30 last night, got up once about 4am to use the bathroom and drink a glass of water.  I woke up at 6:30 and got up at 7am feeling pretty refreshed.

7:25am and I notice Lionel driving away with a blonde woman sitting in the passenger seat.

7:30am and a small dove crashes into my balcony window.  Now it’s walking along the floor – maybe trying to recover from the trauma.

I used the ATM at Viva to take a little money out of my USAA account and then I had breakfast at Bunuelo Express.  An hour later I had another cup of coffee with a Bunuelo.

At 11:45 John Freddy showed up, and though he couldn’t stay to play, it seems he is interested in playing some future Saturday morning.

Lunch was the Hamburger Combo #3 at Gordog’s.  About 1:30 it was getting crowded so I decided to stop hogging a table and packed up and left for home.

When I got back to my apartment I found the entire $2000 now appears to be available in my account.  It might have been there for a couple of days already because I wasn’t checking it every day.  Anyway the check for the apartment is on the way.

Dinner was a waffle with a bag of milk I bought at the corner store and a pat of butter I kept from breakfast.

Friday, July 26th, 2013

Warning!  Long posting ahead!  (But you might be able to skip some of it.)

I went to bed at 10:30, got up 4 or 5 times during the night to use the bathroom.  Was this because I had such a modest dinner (cereal) before taking my medicine?  Woke up at 6:30 and as soon as I moved I got a cramp in my right calf.  It this due to too much walking or is there something – like Potassium – missing from my diet?  Finally got up at 7am and decided to skip my usual Friday morning workout.

I forgot to mention yesterday while Jhon and I were having our drinks at the store, David, who I first wrote about 2 months ago, was sitting a couple of tables away.  I was reading Jhon several jokes when David said he had to ask me a question.  He said something like “Do you know how to make the sun without getting burned?”  It just didn’t make sense.  After a couple of attempts to clarify his question he finally got up and moved to our table.  Jhon asked him if he had been drinking and he said “no”.  I looked at the glassy look in his eyes and asked him if he has been taking drugs and he said “yes”.  I told him what he is saying isn’t making any sense and we never heard another peep out of him after that.  About 15 minutes later he got up without a word and walked back towards his apartment.  Strange guy; not someone I want to be friends with!

I also figured out the easiest way to turn off the “flashlight” is simply to turn the cell phone off and back on.

Last night I set up the voicemail on my magicJack and sent my brother an email asking him to call my number and leave me a message.  This morning while I was having my coffee and reading my emails I saw I had one from magicJack telling me my brother had called a few minutes before and not only could I log into my magicJack account on my laptop to retrieve the message but I could also play his message on my iPad by simply clicking an icon in the email.  That was so cool!  Now when someone calls me and I’m not on the computer they can leave me a message.

I’ve gotten several responses to my Non-Resident Alien posting on Colombia Expats.  For example (with minor cleanup of their English):

Harry T: “I read your posts on the Yahoo Colombia Expats board regarding the 30 percent reduction of your retirement pension. I decided not to post my suggestions on the board but instead to send you a private e-mail because many of the posts were more about bad mouthing some IRS policy than offering advice on how you can get the company to stop withhold 30 percent of your pension.
Here is my take on your situation. In your blog, you stated that you are receiving mail in Medellin from your pension office.  This action suggests that at some point in the past, you provided your pension office a foreign address (a physical and mailing address in Colombia). Terry that action was probably the beginning of the miscommunication between you and the company.
However, at this point the most important thing is getting your money released. I suggest, use your Magic Jack to call your pension office.  Ask to speak to a supervisor and explain that a mistake was made.  Let the person know that you are an American citizen, end of discussion. Let the person know that you have an American address, phone number, bank accounts, and you were born in xxx city in 19xx.
Ask what type of document would be acceptable to prove your citizenship. Get that person's name and send the required information to his or her attention.  Your pension office is probably going to require some type of document or statement from you to make the change.  It may accept just a notarized letter.  But, that would mean a trip to the Embassy in Bogota to get a notarized statement.
Next, you should change your foreign address to an American address.  During my 7 plus years in Panama, I never gave anyone an address of phone number in Panama.  And, of the hundreds if not thousands of retirees living in Panama City I never met anyone who did not conduct their business through an American address.  The one exception is that some folks have their social security checks deposited directed into a local bank.  The State Department has made special arrangement with one or two banks in almost every country to allow direct deposit of social security and military retirement checks.  Some people use that process and others prefer to have their checks deposited into a bank in the United States.
It seems to me that the company made a mistake but you may have to push the issue upward to a supervisor, a manager to get a quick resolution.  Thirty percent is no small amount of money.
Finally, if you prefer not to use a mail forwarding company that would provide an address in the Miami area, use your brother's address. Your magic jack has an American telephone number, and you have American bank accounts.  In addition, your passport has your citizenship.”

Chuck: “You are being caught up in the IRS crackdown on citizens parking money offshore to avoid taxes, obviously people living on a pension are not the problem but you get lumped into a greater attempt to collect $$.
Colombia is not on an approved list that the IRS maintains therefore you get hit with the bigger withholding, but important to note Is that it is a withholding not additional tax, when you file your taxes you should get it all back, of course it can crimp your budget during the year”

Tommy (an ex-US judge): “If it were I, I would be on the phone and ‘in your face’, threatening to report unlawful deduction (since I am a US citizen) and so forth. Would not a simple fax of a copy of your passport do the trick? I have a VOIP phone at my home that you are welcome to use to call and get this straightened out.”

Jim D:Do you have a Stateside address?  I do, and have not been back for many years and my pension is deposited in my bank in the States and I have not been affected”

Clyde: “It would appear that you would be well served to buy a scanner and send a scan of the information page of your passport to your pension company.  Assuming you are an American citizen that should solve your problem.”

Costabaru: “As far as I can tell that is the default position they take to avoid harsh punitive penalties. This happened to me. I was pissed as I am a descendent of Rev. War patriots. This triggered when i changed my address to Panama even though the pension was being deposited in the US. They didn't know my citizenship until I sent them documents to that effect. Took over a year to get the withholding back, but the deductions stopped immediately. So in the end the onus is on you to show that you are not a "foreign person". Dummies, yes! What a load!”
Heidenis: “Unfortunately, Chuck is right BUT, it is not happening only in Colombia. All American monies being sent out of the US for pension, investments or for profiteering is subject to a withholding tax. I have invested money in Canadian stocks and bonds. Every year, they notify the IRS of the amount of money made and withhold 15% of it. It forces the resolution of any gains to go thru the IRS and will be credited back to you if your taxes work out that way. It also opens a "window" for the IRS to peek at what you are doing financially outside of the US borders. The tax man ALWAYS wins! The best answer so far is to maintain a US address ....there are services that do this like UPS.... and pay your taxes every year. If your taxes are done electronically via computer....turbo tax, H+R Block etc....there is no real way that they would come after you. The IRS uses the USPS to contact you if there are any conflicts and for a small fee the UPS folks can forward mail to you for resolution.  If you do not pay taxes or at least file a tax form your SS checks can and will be stopped until resolution has been achieved.  Just an FYI!”

I’m confident in time I can get my pension company to stop their 30% withholding practice, but after that – do I go through the trouble of changing all my addresses back to a US address?

I checked the movie theatres and there isn’t anything new playing this week.

I really want to see all the Chicago Bears football games this year.  I would rather see them on the big screen but barring that I would be willing to watch them on my laptop.  This morning I found the following information on the Chicago Bears app on my iPad:

Chicago Bears Mobile: Watch Bears games online this season
Probably most appropriate for me are their Game Pass and Audio Pass services:
“ChicagoBears.com and the National Football League are once again giving fans the opportunity to follow every minute of NFL football and scout the team like a pro this season with a full suite of enhanced services. Each product allows fans to view games on their desktop computer or mobile/tablet devices in HD with DVR control features.
Bears fans living outside the United States and Mexico can subscribe to a similar service called Game Pass, an international version of Game Rewind that allows fans to watch NFL games live in HD with DVR controls.
Another service available is Audio Pass, which will allow fans to listen to the home or away team radio broadcasts for every NFL game as they're taking place.
Now, it's easier than ever to follow every snap of Bears football at home, on the go, and in HD.”

Game Pass is $99.99 for all the Bears preseason and regular season games through January 10th.  (Not sure if that would include playoff games.)  It looks like it would work on my iPad but not my laptop.)

Audio Pass is $14.99 for the audio version only; otherwise it’s the same as the above.
I think I might go with Game pass for a season and then if it turns out I can find all the games elsewhere then I just wouldn’t renew it for next season.

I just checked the Bears season schedule and of the 16 regular season games:
Games on CBS: 2
Games on FOX: 10
Games on NBC: 1
Games on ESPN: 2
Games on NFL Network: 1

The NFL Network game is a Thursday Night Game of the Week and the ESPN games are both a Monday Night Game of the Week.

So to summarize, I should be able to see the NFL Network and ESPN games in some sports bar here and the others I should be able to watch using USTVNOW.  (I just have to remember to log in early so as to get into the bandwidth.)

Breakfast was a bowl of cereal with my leftover milk.

Lunch was a Hamburdog at Dogger’s in the lower level of Viva Mall for 8,900 with a bag of potato chips for 1900 and a large Pepsi for 3,200 for a total of 14,000 ($7.37).  A Chicago hot dog is traditionally an all beef hotdog, right?  A hamburger is made of beef, right?  Therefore, a Hamburdog is an all beef hotdog.  It was tasty but instead of being thick like a Chicago style it is long more like a foot long.  From there I walked to Dario’s apartment building and it only took 15 minutes.  I have to remember that because I keep getting there early.

We walked down to Avenida 80 and caught a Circular 302 bus.  While on the bus I confirmed that it goes to Monterrey C.C.  We got off across the street from the SaludCoop building which is just down the street from the Immigration office.  We crossed the street and behind the building is a campus with the Belen library.  There is security outside the library and I had to give the woman a peek inside my chess bag.  Dario and I played 2 games of chess – 30 minutes each.  In the first game I had  black and I was in command throughout the game but I ended up losing on time.  The 2nd game I had white and early on he made a mistake and I got a knight for a pawn and he resigned on the 24th move since the outcome was inevitable.

He then asked me if a young man there could play against me and Dario would be down the hall in another room.  The young man spoke good English and was a very good player.  He got me “out of book” from the very first move.  After 30 moves we each had 3 pawns in front of our king and a rook and we agreed to a draw.
There was a cute boy of about 5 or 6 who kept trying to talk to me in English and Spanish but we just couldn’t communicate.

I then went down the hall and guess who was there with Dario?  Margarita, his dentist friend. They were working on something like a crossword puzzle.  There were a few clues in English that I helped them with.  While they were working on that I tried to do a Sudoku puzzle but I was only able to find 2 numbers.

We left there and went to a small store where he and I each had a Pepsi and a slice of cake and Margarita had a small bag of cookies.  I learned Margarita has a 27 year old son who is also a dentist and a husband who is a doctor.  When then walked to her car and she gave us a ride down Avenida 80 near his house.  On the way, there was a young man at a stoplight riding a unicycle with one leg balancing a soccer ball and also balancing something on top of his head.  We also drove past Kif Kof Burger and at 5pm on a Friday night there was no one there.  Amazing what they can learn to do here to make money.  We then said our goodbyes and I walked a couple blocks more to Viva Mall.  BTW, Dario paid for the snacks and all the bus rides.

I had a Whopper and large milkshake at Burger King for 16,100.  The young girl didn’t even ask for the extra 100 pesos when I only gave her 16mil.

When I got back to my apartment I noticed the microwave read 000 instead of the time so we must have lost our power temporarily while I was gone.

Just after 6pm I was finishing my shower when I heard someone buzz my apartment from outside.  Since they buzzed more than once I was pretty sure it was Beatriz.  I wasn’t expecting her until 7pm.  I dried myself off as quickly as I could, put on my terry cloth towel and went out on the balcony.  She was sitting on the little ledge on the neighbor’s property.  She was dressed in jeans and a nice top so I then had an idea of how to dress.  I put on jeans and let her pick out a short sleeved shirt for me to wear.  We walked across the street from Laureles Mall to a place called “San Antonio Dulces y Postres” which means “San Antonio sweets and desserts”.  We each picked out a different slice of cake – hers was cherry and mine was more like tiramisu for a total of 9mil ($4.74).  We each also had a cup of water – what a cheap date she is!

We then stopped across the street at Laureles Mall and looked at the pets in the pet store and we stopped in the open pet area and watched the dogs playing with each other.  On the walk back we stopped at her house for a minute and she went inside.  A minute later her son came out and we chatted a bit in English.  If I remember correctly he’s going to be 19 on August 11th.  A minute later Beatriz’ mother came out - who doesn’t speak any English.  What’s interesting is that Beatriz, who is 5’ tall, is at least about a foot taller than her mother, and her son is about 6’ tall.

Back at my apartment I copied a few jokes into the Google Translator for her that she enjoyed.  We’re going to meet again on Sunday at 1pm when she promised to clean my apartment.  There is a small chance she might meet me Saturday at Laureles Mall.

Thursday, July 25th, 2013

Today is the 1st day of Chicago Bears training camp!  I’m really looking forward to their upcoming season.  Because of my foreign retirement I have more time than ever to follow the Bears.

Just before I went to bed I had a sudden attack of heartburn.  I took 3 small Tums, waited another 30 minutes and finally went to bed at 11:30.  I got to sleep quickly but woke up at 1:10 with another feeling of heartburn.  I took 1 more Tum and went back to sleep.  I woke up at 6:20 put some drops in my eyes and went back to bed with a small towel covering my eyes to keep out the sun.  I got up at 6:45 took 2 Excedrin Migraine (generic) to help clear my head.  I finally got up about 7:20 and proceeded with my day.

Last night I got Beatriz’ number for accumulating points at Exito; no more for Reina.

Beatriz and I are going to meet Friday night at my apartment at 7pm and then we’re going to go for coffee and desserts at a bakery across the street from Laureles Mall.  She said they are delicious there.

I finished my book How to Reassess Your Chess by International Master Jeremy Silman that I brought with me from the States.  I ordered the book Chess Strategy for the Tournament Player from Amazon that’s estimated for delivery here between July 12th and August 1st so hopefully it will arrive any day now.

About 9:45 I stopped at the barber shop but Oscar wasn’t there.  I understand he should be there at 11am so I told Jhon on my way back that if I wasn’t back by noon he could meet me at the restaurant as I have to walk right past it on my way to his office.

I was back at the barber shop just before 11 and was introduced to Irma who gave me a very nice trim.  She spent an hour on me and when she was done I asked how much and she said 5mil ($2.63).  I had a 5mil and 50mil bill on me and I wanted to give her a tip so I showed her the 50mil bill and I could see by her expression that that was too big.  I told her she could have a tip with the 50mil bill or no tip with the 5mil bill and she took the 5mil bill.  I told her I would tip her next time.

I me Jhon at the restaurant a couple shops down just after noon.  I had my usual and he had what he called “wet chicken”.  We saw Laura there and she helped serve us our food.  After lunch I killed a few minutes at Jhon’s office and then started my 12 block walk to Dario’s apartment.  On the way I passed an old woman wearing a “Chicago Bears 2006 Conference Champion T-shirt”.

I got to Dario’s about 20 minutes early.  When he came out we went to a recreation room and picked up a plastic table and 2 chairs and took them to the same balcony where we had been before.

He showed me a list of more than 12 men that are part of a chess club he started in his building.  He’s teaching them the game and he invited me to join him in a simultaneous exhibition against them.  Of course I enthusiastically agreed.

The first game I had black and again he opened with “d4” aka P-Q4.  He has beaten me consistently with this opening as I have struggled to find a defense that I am comfortable with.  He usually gets me in a bind with pawns coming down my throat.  This time when he attacked me I attacked right back and some things I learned in my books helped me to get my first victory against him with black.

The second game I had white and was able to get into the opening I am most comfortable with.  He hung a knight (that means nothing was protecting it) but I had one of my knights in the way of being able to capture it with my queen.  While I was trying to figure out how to make a good move with my knight so that I could pick up his knight for free, he made a move that allowed me to trade off my knight for his bishop and then pick up the unprotected knight for free.  After that it was just a matter of continuing to make good moves and trade material to an easy endgame for another win.  This was the first time I won 2 games in the same day against him.  Once before he won 2 games against me.  Most of the time he wins one and I win one.

While I was there he said “there’s my wife, the one in glasses” as 2 ladies were walking down the stairs behind me.  I had never seen her before.

So now I know.  Dario’s wife, Amparo, is the matronly looking woman approximately the same age as he.  His friend (amiga), not his girlfriend (novia), is an attractive 50 year old dentist named Margarita.  Hmmm.  We finished playing about 4pm and he invited me to come back tomorrow and we’ll go to the library to play chess.

Since I was 2/3 of the way to Philly Steaks I decided to go there for dinner.  The same woman was working there so I told her to bring me ½ of the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich and wrap the other half to go.  I also had 2 Pepsis for a total of just under 18mil ($9.47).

I caught the Circular 303 bus back to Viva Mall for $1.  I never explained before but the crossover you use to get across busy Avenida 80 has 2 ways to ascend.  You can use the stairs or a ramp.  I could see someone sleeping on a cardboard box on the ramp so I went that way where usually I use the stairs.  As I got closer I could see 2 sets of feet and when I was standing over them I could see it was a man and a woman.  I’ve never seen anybody so dirty in my life; it looked like they stepped out of a coalmine.  I tapped his foot with my shoe – no response.  I tapped it again and this time he woke up.  She also woke up and opened her mouth and I could only see one tooth.  I asked him, in Spanish “want a sandwich”?  He took it and said “thank you”.  There were a couple other people around I could have given it too but they certainly seemed to need it the most.  I hope they enjoyed it.

I stopped at Jhon’s office and we chatted a bit and then moved to the store where I had a small juice and he had a small coke for a total of 2mil ($1).  I finished telling him my jokes and we talked philosophy.  He is quite a philosopher.  He thinks he can “read” people easily.

As we left I noticed the “flashlight” on my cell phone was shining through my shorts and I couldn’t figure out how to turn it off.  I remember seeing that option before but I can’t find it now – and it’s not called “flashlight”.  There must also be some easier way to turn it on and off since it came on while still in my pocket.

Back at my apartment I had a bowl of cereal at 7:30 so I could take my medicine 30 minutes later.

Wednesday, July 24th, 2013

I went to bed at 11pm and had a little trouble getting to sleep.  Maybe because I was playing online chess for 30 minutes just before?  Usually I read right before going to bed.  I got up once during the night and finally got up at 6:30.

Breakfast was about a bowl and a half of cereal to finish all the strawberries I had left.

I finished copying the NRA (Non Resident Alien) letter I received from Sears yesterday.  I cut & pasted it into a posting to Colombia Expats requesting their comments.  I called USAA and asked if I could write a check out now or if I had to wait until the remainder of the deposit is no longer “on hold”.  She strongly advised I wait until the money is no longer “on hold”.  Her reasons were: 1) someone might cash the check before the money was no longer “on hold” (can’t happen), 2) the money might not get there due to some problem with the deposit (won’t happen; I think I can trust my brother).

I scheduled a check covering my August to October rent to be sent to the owner of the apartment.  It should be there on Monday, July 29th.

The most interesting comment I heard about the birth yesterday of HRH (his royal highness) was that he weighed 8 pounds which is approximately $10 USD.  Lol.

I made an appointment with Jhon for lunch tomorrow at noon.

Lunch today was the Chicken Teriyaki special at Sarku’s.  After I got to Laureles Mall I finished the chess book I had been studying.  Dario arrived about 2pm and we played 2 games of chess.  The first game I had black and I battled him successfully in the center of the board and then shortly after I castled he quickly shifted to the side and successfully attacked my king.  The second game I had white and again he blundered at move 10 and he moved his king when he intended to move his queen.  After that it was just a matter of time until he finally resigned.

Then his wife joined us at the table and we talked a little.  What I learned: She is a dentist with an office nearby; her charge for a crown ($500) is the same as my dentist; she is an excellent dancer (Tango, etc.);  Dario is in the import/export business – something to do with cars; he says English is necessary for business; much of the younger generation is learning English; the Circular 302 bus (confirmed later by Jhon & Beatriz) makes the same stops as the Circular 303 bus but in the opposite direction.  That means I should be able to cut my time in half (45 minutes to 20) when going to my dentist in El Poblado.  Dario invited me to play chess again tomorrow at 2pm at his apartment.  Also we are going to the library Friday to play chess.

Dinner was chili and mango juice at El Comedor de Chava in Laureles Mall.

Beatriz came over a little after 7pm and gave me another manicure.  I gave her 30mil for her trouble.

Tuesday, July 23rd, 2013

I went to bed at 11pm, got up once during the night, woke up at 6am and got up at 6:30.

I took out the garbage this morning and on the way back I checked the garage and I found 2 envelopes from Sears.  One envelope is dated May 21st and is just an annual reminder of how to contact the Sears Holding Pension Plan department.  The other envelope is dated June 3rd and is the response to my May 20th telephone call requesting why 30% was deducted from my pension.  It quotes IRS information whereby “A 30% mandatory tax withholding is enforced for all foreign persons living outside the United States.”  Here’s my plan.  The first thing I’m going to do is type a copy of this information into a Word document.  The second thing is to post it to Colombia Expat Exchange to see what comments I get.  Thirdly, I will review the tax codes mentioned to see if I can figure this out myself.  Lastly, I can send the information to my tax accountant to see what their take on it is.  But that might cost me $.

The addresses on both envelopes still have errors I had requested correcting on my May 20th call.

After a breakfast of cereal and the mango Beatriz had cut for me yesterday, I completed a couple of RS lessons.  There is a whole set of new words in this new Unit (3).  Luckily, a few I already know so it lightens my load.  I also started typing in the IRS information that Sears sent me.

I took a little nap from 10am to 11am.

Just before noon I went to Jhon’s office and worked with one of his students for a while.  Jhon mentioned the different difficulties between Spanish and English.  In Spanish you have to know that “the car” (coche) is always masculine (el coche) while “the house” (casa) is always feminine (la casa).  Everything seems to be either masculine or feminine and they just learn which it is as they grow up with the language.  I, on the other hand, have to learn them as I go.  On the other hand, Spanish has a word “para” which is used where we would use “to”, “for”, “by”, “at”, etc.  So when Spanish speakers have to learn English they have to convert “para” to the correct English word.

Lunch was the Fried Chicken Combo #2 at Frisby at Laureles Mall.  Andrew never showed up.  I did meet a new guy Diego who was waiting for his Frisby order to go.  We played a quick game of about 15 minutes and I didn’t have much difficulty controlling the situation for an easy win.  Even though he didn’t say anything in English while we were playing, he said “See you later and good luck” as he left.

At Viva mall I stopped in the restroom and noticed something very unusual; a small urinal that’s about 1 foot high.  I guess it’s for small kids.

At Exito I bought a package of floss and a bottle of creamer for my coffee.

I bought a kilo of strawberries from the guy on the corner.

Jhon was working on translating a document so I didn’t want to bother him further.
Dinner was a waffle with strawberries.  I’ll keep the rest for breakfast tomorrow.
The little girl (maybe 10 years old) across the street sounds like she’s having another attitude problem.  It seems ever week I hear her crying and wailing.  I guess she’s not getting her way about something.

Last Saturday when we bought fruits for the salad we bought a couple of my favorite apples so they were either Fujis or Galas.  We had one left over and I had it tonight but I was very disappointed.  It didn’t taste as delicious as when I had them in the States.  Luckily they have other more delicious fruits here.

I hear a lot of cheering somewhere in the distance.  I’m guessing it’s a victory celebration for Atletico Nacional winning the Colombian championship.

I see the $2000 in my USAA account but again it has the message “This account currently has $1200 on hold.”  I guess I’ll have to call USAA tomorrow to find out if I can write a check against it.
