Self-isolation Day 109.

Happy Independence Day!

Last night I was so tired I went to bed at 9:30. The final episode of Teresa’s novella was still on but she probably came to bed as soon as it was over. I woke up at 3:30 and couldn’t get back to sleep. I got up at 4am and watched an episode of Ozark on Netflix then went back to bed. I still couln’t get back to sleep and I got up at 5:30.

Teresa left about 8:30 for her walk.

I left at 9:15 and started my usual circular route. At the bottom of the hill I headed south and crossed the street by the restaurant La Bahia where I ran into Glenn getting out of his taxi. I first stopped and recycled a plastic bottle then we headed into the mall. Upstairs at the Co-Working space there is a deli but we didn’t see anyone eating or drinking anything. We sat on some comfortable couches not far from each other and chatted for an hour. We went outside and into Exito where we bought coffee at Juan Valdez. Outside we sat on a bench and chatted while drinking our coffee. A security guard came out and explained that we can only drink coffee while walking, not sitting. We decided next time we’ll meet at Aymará again.

Glenn left and I headed inside Exito where I picked up a package of clothes hangers, a couple new facemasks and some food items. I took a taxi back to the apt.

It was brought to my attention that I messed up Thursday’s post so I went back and corrected it.

Teresa left just before 3pm to meet friends for a little shopping. I had a chess lesson with Juan Carlos from 3:30 to 5:30. Besides solving a few puzzles we played a 15 minute with 30 second interval game against each other so I could practice the Sicilian Defense. After a few mis-starts I played pretty well holding onto a draw.

Teresa returned at 7:15 with a sandwich for me from Q’Bano.

We got a little rain in the evening.

MLB and the Major League Baseball Players Association announced the first set of results for COVID-19 testing on Friday, publishing that just 1.2% of samples collected found positive tests or 38 tests out of 3,185 samples.

The MLB and MLBPA said that of those 38 positive tests, 31 came from players while seven resulted from staff members. Additionally, 19 different clubs had one or more individuals test positive during intake testing.

The tests administered occurred prior to the workouts and full baseball activities, which began Friday.

For a brief shining moment at the end of May, Americans may have had hope that the COVID-19 pandemic was behind us. But by mid-June, the coronavirus started surging in some southern and western states. Now, just a few short weeks later, 40 out of 50 U.S. states are seeing new COVID case numbers climb again. "Put simply, we are losing the war with the SARS-CoV-2 virus," Mark Kortepeter, MD, an infectious disease doctor and professor of epidemiology at University of Nebraska Medical Center, wrote for Forbes.

Florida’s Covid-19 cases jumped by the most during the pandemic, two days after the previous high, a sign that the outbreak is expanding and leading to more serious clinical consequences.

Reported new cases rose by 11,458, or 6.4%, to 190,052, compared with an average 5.5% in the previous seven days. The Sunshine State had a record 10,109 cases on Thursday. Deaths reached 3,702, according to the release, which includes data through Friday, an increase of 18, the fewest since June 22.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has ruled out reimposing a lockdown, but hospitals and local officials are taking note of the rising trend in cases.

A Trump replay from April 11th: Regarding ventilators, “A lot of them will be coming at a time when we won’t need them as badly.”

Joke of the day

A Canadian tourist is fascinated by the Native American way of life and culture, so he decides to visit a reservation in the United States to find out more.

After a long and dusty drive through the Arizona desert, he finally arrives at the reservation.

Soon after his arrival, the tourist meets an old chief, who claims to remember everything that ever happened in his life.

The tourist is curious and asks the chief: "What did you have for breakfast on your fifth birthday?"

Without hesitation, the chief replies: "eggs".

The tourist was very impressed by this, and he never forgot the chief’s words, even after his visit had long since ended.

Ten years later, he returns to the reservation and is surprised to see the same old chief again.

He approaches the chief, puts his hand up flat and greets him with "how".

“Scrambled,” the old chief replied.
