Using Didi’s new “Set Your Fare” interface I paid 15,200 pesos for a ride to Unicentro.

It’s quite confusing seeing the Express and Set Your fare and a 20% discount on their new interface, obviously a work in progress.

Jose and I had breakfast in Todo Fresa, I had French toast with a latte and Jose had an egg casserole and an American coffee.

In the food court I had the Black pieces in the first game and by the 29th move the computer said “Black is clearly winning”. Obviously, I didn’t find the proper continuation because I lost in 49 moves. The computer’s comment about the game, “What a bad dream for Black.”

I made a trip to the restroom and as I entered I saw the doors closed on the last 2 of the 4 stalls. I looked in the first stall and the toilet was child sized. In the second stall there was no toilet paper (glad I checked). I immediately tried the last door (handicapped) and it was vacant. I was doing my thing and I had just pulled out some toilet paper when the lights went out. (A lot of the mall bathrooms have motion activated lights and I was alone.) I waved my hand in the air but I guess I was too far from the sensor. I did the best I could in the dark and returned to the table.

I had the White pieces in the second game and I had a winning move on the 13th move but missed it. Around the 25th move I lost the advantage and lost on the 49th move. ☹

We’re not sure if we’ll be playing next Tuesday because my brother arrives this Friday. I’ll let him know later.

For my ride back to my apt drivers accepted then deleted my offer 3 times before Carlos accepted for 18,300 pesos.

I finished the series Designated Survivor and started the movie NYAD.

Last night I went to bed at 10pm, got up once during the night, woke up at 6am and got up at 6:30.

I completed my workout today between 8:15 and 9:15.

Back at the apt I gave myself a 45-minute cool down then took my shower.

I logged onto Alessia Santeramo’s stream at 10:15 and she was just finishing up the lesson. ☹ They are in Italy which is 6 hours later and their next get together will be Wednesday at 3pm (9am EST) then Sunday at 4pm (10am EST).

I finally deleted enough files that I can now save my blog notes. We’ll see how long that lasts.

I finished the novel The Girl Who Was Taken by Charlie Donlea which was pretty good.

Sunday, February 4, 2024

Last night I went to bed at 10pm, got up once during the night, again just before 6am (Teresa was in the bathroom brushing her teeth), as soon as my head hit the pillow I heard a semi pull up, sounds of metal on metal, people talking but that only lasted 5 minutes, I finally got up at 6:30.

Teresa received a call from Esmerlda that she’s not going to San Peregrino so Teresa’s going alone.

I left the apt at 8:15 and walked to Sao Paolo. I ordered a latte with an almond croissant and Glenn arrived a few minutes later. Glenn’s hobby is playing pinochle online. The maximum rating is 100 and he’s hit it 10 times then starts over with a new account. Later I had calentao with another latte.

I erred in my game against 1300-rated Mekael965 and he checkmated me on the 42nd move reducing my rating to 1592. ☹

Just before 12:30, on Chess.com, I stumbled on WFM Alessia Santeramo giving a beginner’s chess lesson to an Italian girl named Julia. Very interesting. It looks like they will continue it after 6pm tomorrow (Italian time?) on https://www.twitch.TV/AlessiaSanteramo. I’ll try to see if I can catch that.

Weather prediction for this afternoon:

Spoiler Alert: we didn't have any rain the rest of th day.

For lunch I had a meatball sandwich at Na Pizza. Even though it’s my second time there I want to mention that the place is much lighter and I appreciated the music and getting catsup in a small dish instead of plastic packets.

I went next door and had a café con leche at one of Parva’s outside tables. I bought a palito de pollo for Teresa in case she come home hungry. When I left at 5:30 Antonio’s had a long line and lots of people were hanging out in the park.

I watched a couple more episodes of Designated Survivor.

Teresa returned at 7pm and we shared the pastel de pollo.

Saturday, February 3, 2024

Last night I went to bed at 10pm (still raining), got up once during the night, finally waking/getting up at 7:15am.

I left the apt at 9am and took a Didi to the mall. I talked briefly in my broken Spanish with my driver Daniela who has visited Chicago with her family. 😊

In Viva Envigado I paid for the apt, my health insurance and the gym.

I made a 2,000,000-peso withdrawal from Davivienda using my Master Card. Thankfully, the ATM didn’t give me all 100s.

I left at 11:30 and took the back way into Exito where I bought a six-pack of Coke and returned to the apt by taxi. Teresa called me when we were 2 blocks away but I didn’t answer. When I returned to the apt she said she needed crema de leche, Alpina brand so she sent me to Mercado Madrid. When I got there, I asked a girl that I though worked there where I could find the crema de leche. When she took me there, I only saw the Alqueria brand so I asked her if they have the Alpina brand.

The girl went and got another girl who explained they don’t have that brand. I sent Teresa the above photos and asked her if she wanted the red or blue package. When she didn’t answer within a couple minutes, I called her and asked her to look at her photos on Whatsapp. She said she didn’t want either of these and to just return to the apt. Time, wasted.

Troyclough (1451) blundered a bishop on the 18th move and soon resigned increasing my rating to 1604. The computer said my play was flawless (Weighted Error Value = 0.0); first time I’ve seen that.

I thought Mekael965 was going to trap my rook but instead he blundered a knight.

I have a total of four correspondence games going on at the same time.

Very cool afternoon, only 75 degrees with a cool breeze and showers expected after 3:30 so I decided not to venture out.

I finished season 2 of Designated Survivor.

Tomorrow Teresa is going to mass in San Peragrino with Esmeralda so I’ll be on my own for lunch.

About 9pm I felt discomfort in my upper back so I took half an Acetaminophen and the discomfort quickly disappeared.

Friday, February 2, 2024

Last night I went to bed at 10pm, got up once during the night, finally waking/getting up at 6:15am.

It’s Groundhog Day!

At 7:15 I watched live as Punxsutawney Phil in Punxsutawney, PA saw his shadow meaning there will be an early spring this year.

I completed my workout in Smartfit between 8:15 and 9:15. On the 3rd floor, as I was leaving, I noticed a yellow fence had been put up outside on their balcony, making it like a patio.

Back at the apt I cooled down for about 30 minutes then took a warm shower. 😊

I was going to go to Viva Envigado to pay some bills but the threat of rain scared me off. All we got was a short shower for 30 minutes or so.

I watched a new movie on Netflix, Life of a King (6.9), that, even though it was about chess, was only so so.

I watched more episodes of Designated Survivor and basically vegged out the rest of the day.

It was 9:30 when I noticed it was pouring outside.

Thursday, February 1, 2024

Last night I went to bed at 10pm, got up once during the night, finally waking/getting up at 6am.

Another interesting day in paradise as you will see (or read)…

I was up early enough that Teresa made me breakfast, the usual coffee, scrambled eggs and half a bagel with strawberry preserves.

Troyclough resigned our game on the 21st move increasing my rating to 1606.

At 7:45 I took my shower, at 8:15 there’s a knock on my door and it’s the guy to fix our hot water heater. I explained I don’t understand much Spanish but I let him in to take a look at the problem and I understand there’s more to it than just putting on new plumber’s tape and tightening it with a wrench, as we need a new hose; still probably something I could have done weeks ago. I had him put Teresa’s telephone number in his phone so they can agree on a time to meet.

I left the apt at 9:15 and Marcos and Marshall were waiting for me at a Parva outside table. Marcos informed me there’s a new airline named JetSMART with low-cost flights (starting at 60,000 pesos?) to Santa Marta so hopefully other airlines will lower the cost of their seats. He also recommended this beach called Baru an hour from Cartagena.

Marshall informed me he was born on a beach. I bit and said, “really?”. He replied “yes, I’m a son of a beach”. 😊

A large flatbed truck pulled up and they unloaded a number of 20’ pieces of rebar and took them inside next door.

Marcos and Marshall left just after 10am and I moved inside and had a large latte for 10,500 pesos.

I received this interesting text message from someone in India. I replied and then blocked their number.

Teresa called and told me she will be having lunch in La Bahia. I explained I’m going to a restaurant in Poblado because I want to exchange a book. I was planning on taking a bus to Sweet Georgia in Poblado but now The Weather Channel is predicting showers.

A couple of my low rated opponents are giving me all I can handle in the endgame. I’m hoping for a win and a draw between the two but we’ll see.

I received an email from Margarita Montez letting me know she has 2 apts available in Laureles. I told her I’d keep an eye out for her.

I left at 11:30 and returned to the apt.

I left again at 12:30 and took a Didi to Sweet Georgia in Poblado for 11,000 pesos.  (I wanted to get there before the rain.) A block from the restaurant traffic wasn’t moving so I got out and walked the last block. I saw this interesting sight across the street

The man on the left is in the new police uniform that probably means he’s higher up than the normal policeman. He was putting on a bulletproof vest as I arrived. I certainly had their attention when I took the photo. Good thing they’re trained not to shoot bystanders.

Inside I exchanged my hardback, Becoming by Michelle O’Bama for 2 New York Times Bestsellers in paperback, home safe by Elizabeth Berg and The Round House by Louise Erdrich.

I had a waffle with scrambled eggs, coffee and a glass of orange juice for 43mil.

Teresa called and asked me to meet her for gelato at Antonio’s but I reminded her I’m in Poblado. She didn’t say anything about the guy to fix our hot water heater so I guess they have yet to connect.

I ordered a Didi for 15,000 pesos and it took him at least 10 minutes to arrive. I was standing near the entrance just out of the rain and the 2 men across the street were standing together on the street corner still keeping an eye on me. My best guess is there must be an important person in the area that needs protection.

When I got in the car the driver motioned for me to not slam the door which is unusual with the exception of taxis.

I was back at the apt in a steady drizzle by 2:30 and Teresa had returned.

Teresa wanted to go for pizza but I showed her the weather prediction for this evening

And she changed her mind and we had it delivered.

Wednesday, January 31, 2024

Last night I went to bed at 10pm, got up once during the night, finally waking/getting up at 6:30.

The plan for today is gym, coffee, then meet Teresa for lunch at La Bahia (she has to visit MT in her apt because of a water leak?), then Mayorista for fish for her and tea for me.

I see my Social Security and pension deposits are in my accounts.

I completed my Smartfit workout between 8:15 and 9:15. I’m feeling my shoulders aren’t right so I’m going to lower the weight but I should be able to increase the reps.

I had a latte in Los Porteños until 11:30.

I left the apt at 12:15 and walked to La Bahia. I had to wait about 15 minutes for Teresa to show up with MT.

We each had their menu of the day plus a bottle of water for Teresa for a total of 56,000 pesos ($14).

We said goodbye to MT and hopped in a taxi that took us to Mayorista. As soon as we walked into Badia Teresa must have said something because the clerk immediately took down all the boxes (13) of chamomile tea and I charged 141,700 pesos ($36).

We walked a couple blocks to Amazonas Pescado y Marisco where Teresa bought a large slice of salmon for 89,320 pesos ($23).

Outside we quickly caught a taxi and were back at the apt by 2pm.

I had to resave some excel spreadsheets in order to reclaim some much-needed space.

Teresa wants to go to an 8am gym class in Viva Envigado tomorrow so only if I get up by 6:30 will she have time to make me breakfast. And she has a 12:40pm appointment at eps so I’ll be on my own for lunch. (I’ve heard that before!)

I watched a couple more episodes of Designated Survivor.
