Quarantine Day 140.
Last night I went to bed at 10:30 and got up 3 times during
the night. I got up again at 7am when a small dog started barking. It didn’t
take long for a 2nd, 3rd and finally a 4th to join
in. I finally gave up and got up at 7:30.
Last night I played 4 games on Chess.com, winning 3
and losing 1. I had the black pieces in 3 of the 4 games. My new rating is 1223.
Teresa left at 9:15 for her walk.
I watched the first 20
minutes of the Today show then went for my walk. Near the end I saw
workers painting no parking signs on both sides of a side street. I took a
little detour and walked over to Calle 31 where I found the new restaurant – Brooklyn
Restaurant and Lounge.I talked briefly with the owner and
wished him good luck. I was back at the apt by 10:15.
Teresa returned at 11:15.
I’m pretty confident
the rainy season is over – finally.
I beat Teresa in
parcheesi today 5 games to 4.
Yesterday, Manhattan's district attorney suggested he was
investigating Trump and his company for possible bank and insurance fraud. And
that he's asked a federal judge to throw out Trump's lawsuit protecting his
personal and corporate tax returns. This comes a month after SCOTUS ruled that the DA's prosecutors could pursue Trump's
financial records because not even a president is above a criminal
investigation. Reminder: the Manhattan DA was already seeking Trump's financial
records as part of an investigation into alleged hush-money payments. Now, the investigation could be a broader
probe into the Trump Organization's dealings of potential "criminal
conduct."
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that he has the
right to issue an executive order on mail-in voting but hasn’t gotten to it
yet, and he vowed to sue Nevada over a new law that would send mail-in ballots
to every voter ahead of the November presidential election.
Coronavirus
is more widespread in the US than ever before, prompting White House
coronavirus response coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx to say over the weekend the
country has entered a "new
phase" of the pandemic.
The virus is now hitting urban, suburban and rural areas and has
even spread to Americans living on distant islands. Hawaii and Puerto Rico both
saw their highest seven-day averages of new daily cases on Monday, per data
from Johns Hopkins University.
Nationally, the seven-day average of new daily cases is at about
60,000 and slowly declining, while deaths, which typically lag several weeks
behind, are steadily increasing. For a week straight now, the US has had a
seven-day average of over 1,000 deaths per day.
As the United States and other countries anxiously consider how to
reopen schools, Israel, one of the first countries to do so, illustrates the
dangers of moving too precipitously.
Confident it had beaten the coronavirus and desperate to reboot a
devastated economy, the Israeli government invited the entire student body back
in late May.
Within days, infections were reported at a Jerusalem high school,
which quickly mushroomed into the largest outbreak in a single school in
Israel, possibly the world.
The virus rippled out to the students’
homes and then to other schools and neighborhoods, ultimately infecting
hundreds of students, teachers and relatives.
On
Wednesday, teachers in Georgia’s largest school district returned to
elementary, middle and high school campuses to start in-person planning for the
fall semester.
By
the next day, 260 district employees had been barred from entering their
schools, either because they tested positive for the coronavirus or had
been directly exposed to someone who had.
Some are wondering how schools are supposed to fare if a
multi-billion-dollar industry like the MLB is unable to avoid outbreaks despite a plethora of
resources, strict restrictions, and mandatory testing for its players.
The
US has 4,659,853 ð 4,719,276 ð 4,772,487 coronavirus cases
with 155,100+ ð 155,800+ ð 157,100+ deaths.
Per
Medellin Guru, as of this afternoon Colombia has a total of 306,181 ð 317,651 ð 327,850 334,979 cases with 11,315 deaths. Medellin has 19,691 ð 20,898 ð 22,511 23,158 cases, an increase of 657 from August 3rd
to 4th. Envigado has a total of 1,391 cases, an increase of 40 from August
3rd to 4th. Again, cases are still increasing but finally
aren’t accelerating.
Joke of
the day
It's late
fall and the Indians on a remote reservation in South Dakota asked their new
chief if the coming winter was going to be cold or mild.
Since he
was a chief in a modern society, he had never been taught the old secrets. When
he looked at the sky, he couldn't tell what the winter was going to be like.
Nevertheless,
to be on the safe side, he told his tribe that the winter was indeed going to
be cold and that the members of the village should collect firewood to be
prepared.
But,
being a practical leader, after several days, he got an idea. He went to the
phone booth, called the National Weather Service and asked, 'Is the coming
winter going to be cold?'
'It looks
like this winter is going to be quite cold,' the meteorologist at the weather
service responded.
So the
chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more firewood in order
to be prepared.
A week
later, he called the National Weather Service again. 'Does it still look like it
is going to be a very cold winter?'
'Yes,'
the man at National Weather Service again replied, 'it's going to be a very
cold winter.'
The chief
again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of
firewood they could find.
Two weeks
later, the chief called the National Weather Service again. 'Are you absolutely
sure that the winter is going to be very cold?'
'Absolutely,'
the man replied. 'It's looking more and more like it is going to be one of the
coldest winters we've ever seen.'
'How can
you be so sure?' the chief asked.
The
weatherman replied, 'The Indians are collecting a shitload of firewood.'
