Self-isolation Day 42.

Last night I went to bed at 10:30, got up several times during the night, finally getting up at 7:15.

My $1200 check arrived this morning.  Why not me? I still pay taxes.

Per the Today show the US has 994,569 cases with 56,394 deaths.  A new University of Washington model predicts a total US death toll of 74,000.

I watched the two hours of the Today show.  I was impressed by a product they demonstrated called Halo Fogger that can disinfect the inside of an ambulance or a room full of face masks.

Teresa finally connected with her gynecologist and her appointment has changed from this tomorrow to Tuesday, May 5 at 4pm.

I bought IM Mat Kolosowski’s Attacking Masterclass video training for $49 then I watched:

Chapter 1 - Don’t let the king escape from the center.

Chapter 2 – Open files and diagonals.

Chapter 3 – Invite all your friends to the party.

"It is likely that all crowded chess tournaments will have to be postponed until early or mid-2021", says virologist (and GM!) Luca Shytaj in an interview in New In Chess magazine.

I found this very informative Youtube video on fighting the coronavirus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lze-rMYLf2E&feature=youtu.be

A brief summary:

Dr. David Katz had an op-ed about a month ago in the NY Times Is our fight against the coronavirus worse than the disease?

“If all we do is flatten the curve you don’t prevent deaths, you just change the date.”

Flattening the curve is very important in phase 1 so you don’t overwhelm the medical system but you have to have a phase 2 or as soon as you “release the clamps” (stop self-isolating and social distancing) you just move the coronavirus peak to a later date.  You need to identify who is at high risk for this disease and protect them and let the low risk people go back out into the world.

I informed Teresa that I received a check for $1200.  She asked me if her mother would get one.  I told her ‘no’ because she’s not a US citizen.

I watched a good documentary Coronavirus Explained on Netflix.

Per the US embassy: COVID-19 Health Update and Quarantine Restrictions:  According to the Colombian Ministry of Health, there are 5,597 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Colombia as of April 27.  As per our April 21st message, isolation measures in Colombia continue through May 11.

On April 24, President Duque issued Decree 593, which provides guidance on complying with the preventative isolation measures now in effect countrywide through May 11. Effective April 27, the decree provides for:

  • Opening of economic activities in certain sectors, including infrastructure and manufacturing,
  • Allowances of one hour per day of exercise/physical activity for those between 18-60 years of age during hours prescribed by municipal governments,
    • Click here for details particular to Bogota residents:  exercise may take place no farther than one kilometer from your home from 6:00-10:00 am; no gender-related restrictions);
    • Medellin residents: per information from Mayor Daniel Quintero, exercise may take place from 2:00-3:00 pm;
  • Public parking lots are reopened.

WHO report, September 2019: “There is a very real threat of a rapidly moving, highly lethal pandemic of a respiratory pathogen. The world is not prepared.”

Teresa informed me that her mother received a check also.  I thought it was only for citizens but I guess because she gets SS she got one also.  (She worked in the US for 25 years or so.) I know congress wanted to get the money out to people quickly but this is what happens when you hurry, you make mistakes, probably giving cash to people who really don’t qualify and missing people who do.

President Donald Trump urged state governors to “seriously consider” reopening their public schools” after some announced schools would remain shuttered through the end of the year.

The CDC now says there are 9 main COVID-19 symptoms:

1.   Cough

2.   Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

3.   Fever

4.   Chills

5.   Repeated shaking with chills

6.   Muscle pain

7.   Headache

8.   Sore throat

9.   New loss of taste or smell

The chairwoman of the Arizona Republican Party encouraged people planning to protest stay-at-home orders imposed amid the coronavirus pandemic to dress like health care workers.

Mike Pence made a trip to the Mayo clinic but didn’t wear the required face mask.

A few days ago I was only trailing Teresa 6-5 in parcheesi but after tonight she’s up 11-5.  (Some games are extremely close.)

Trump says 'worst days' of coronavirus are 'behind us'.  I have no idea what that means. This is the same man who said:

January 22nd “We have it totally under control.  It’s one person coming from China.  We have it under control.  It’s going to be fine.”

January 24th “China has been working very hard to contain the Coronavirus.  The United States greatly appreciates their efforts and transparency.  It will all work out well.  In particular, on behalf of the American people, I want to thank President Xi!”

January 30th “We think we have it very well under control.  We have very little problem in this country at the moment – five – and those people are all recuperating successfully.  But we’re working very closely with China and other countries, and we think it’s going to have a good ending for us…that I can assure you.”

February 2nd “We pretty much shut it down, coming in from China.”

February 10th “I think the virus is going to be it’s going to be fine.”

February 14th “We have a very small number of people in the country, right now, with it.  It’s like around 12.  Many of them are getting better.  Some are fully recovered already.  So we’re in very good shape.”

February 19th “I think it’s going to work out fine. I think when we get into April, in the warmer weather, that has a very negative effect on that and that type of virus.”

February 24th “The coronavirus is very much under control in the USA.  We are in contact with everyone and all relevant countries.  CDC & World Health have been working hard and very smart.  Stock Market starting to look very good to me!”

February 25th “CDC and my administration are doing a GREAT job of handling coronavirus.  I think that’s a problem that’s going to go away.  They have studied it.  They know very much.  In fact, we’re very close to a vaccine.”

February 26th “This is like a flu.  This is like a flu.  It’s a little like the regular flu that we have flu shots for.  And we’ll essentially have a flu shot for this in a fairly quick manner…Fifteen, within a couple of days, is going to be down to zero.”

February 27th Trump: “One day it’s like a miracle it will disappear”.

February 28th Trump describes the coronavirus as a “new hoax” of his political rivals. “Now the Democrats are politicizing coronavirus.  And this is their new hoax.”

February 29th “Everything is really under control.”

March 2nd “You take a solid flu vaccine, you don’t think that could have an impact, on corona?”

March 4th “So we have thousands or hundreds of thousands of people that just get better, by, you know, sitting around and even going back to work.”

March 6th “Anybody right now, and yesterday, right now that needs a test gets a test. They’re there. They have the test. The tests are beautiful. Anybody who needs a test gets a test.”

The novel coronavirus has now infected more than 1,000,000 Americans.  Obviously whatever Trump says is bullshit. And the sad thing is when this is over he is going to brag about what a great job he did.

Per the evening news, Colombia has 4,410 current cases with 3,983 recovering at home, 312 hospitalized and 115 in ICU.  They have completed 4,186 tests.

Joke of the day

An older couple were lying in bed one night.  The husband was falling asleep but the wife was in a romantic mood and wanted to talk.

She said, "You used to hold my hand when we were courting."

Wearily he reached across, held her hand for a second and tried to get back to sleep.

A few moments later she said, "Then you used to kiss me."

Mildly irritated, he reached across, gave her a peck on the cheek and settled down to sleep.

Thirty seconds later she said, "Then you used to bite my neck."

Angrily, he threw back the bed clothes and got out of bed.

"Where are you going?" she asked.

"To get my teeth!"
