Happy Mother’s Day!

Last night I went to bed at 10:30, fell asleep quickly, got up once at 3:45, fell back asleep, woke up several times after that, finally waking/getting up at 7am.

I left the apt at 8:10 in 66 degrees for breakfast and ciclovia. Reviewing my blog it looks like it’s been July of 2019 since I last walked for ciclovia. It was a 20-minute walk to De Lolita in the Frontera mall. I ordered scrambled eggs and in the meantime I had a cinnamon roll with a café con leche. When the waitress brought the eggs she asked me if I wanted bread with that. I said “no” but I think next time I’ll get the bread and skip the cinnamon roll. It came to a total of 19mil.

I left at 9am and on my way I saw the “statue man” dressed in green like a soldier. I arrived at Starbucks in Poblado by 9:30. I had a medium café mocca but next time I’ll get the small. I sat outside on their patio and enjoyed the fresh air while I reviewed some chess notes. I left at 11am and on my way back stopped at a stand and bought a bouquet of 11 roses for Teresa for 50mil. The owner spoke very good English having worked in New York for many years. I returned to the apt just before noon in 76 degrees. My cotton shorts and t-shirt were a little thick so in the future if it’s a sunny day I’ll have to wear shorts & t-shirt with thinner material.

Teresa needs to go to the finca to deliver materials for the repair of the patio but she’s worried she won’t be able to return because of ongoing protests.

Teresa told me Esmeralda is coming over later and we’ll go for ice cream but she wants someplace different than Perccimon so I recommended Antonio’s Gelato. At 4pm a little rainstorm came through and the temperature dropped and now she wants to go to the Mexican restaurant Wajaca in Sao Paolo. What I found on the internet says they close on Sundays at 5pm but maybe Mother’s Day has special hours. I googled the place but couldn’t find their phone number and the only nearby location I found was in Villa Grande not Sao Paolo.

Because it turned so cold and rainy, in the end we didn’t go anywhere.

I beat Teresa in parcheesi today 5 games to 2.

Teresa talked to someone then informed me tomorrow she’s going to the gym, then changing her clothes in Bocados Bar before going to the finca so I’m on my own for lunch tomorrow.

I installed the new mouse and it works but it doesn’t track quite as smoothly as my previous Microsoft mouse.

I finished reading Michael Crichton’s The Lost World on my Nook.

Joke of the day

It was a sunny day in Rome when the Pope decided that he wants all the Jews out of Rome. Of course, there was a huge protest from the Jewish sector so the Pope decided he will give them a chance. He invited them to send their greatest mind for a religious debate with him. If the Jewish man won, the Jews could remain living in the city. If the Pope won, the Jews had to leave.

At the Jewish community, they realized that they had no choice. They looked around for a champion who could defend their faith, but no one wanted to volunteer. It was too much responsibility, what if they failed? The only one willing was an old man named Moishe. Being old, he decided he had less to lose. "I've seen and done it a lot in my life. I'm not afraid." he said. He asked only for one addition to the debate. Not being used to saying very much, he asked that neither side be allowed to talk. The Pope accepted this, thinking it a wise decision and will prevent them from saying the normal things.

The day of the holy debate came. Moishe and the Pope sat opposite each other for several minutes, contemplating each other, before the Pope raised his hand and unfurled them to show three fingers. Moishe looked back at him and raised just one finger.

The Pope waved his finger in a circle around himself. Moishe pointed to the ground where he sat emphatically.

The Pope pulled out a wafer and a glass of wine. Moishe pulled out an apple. The Pope stood up and said, 'I give up. This man is too good. The Jews can stay!'

An hour later, the cardinals were all around the Pope asking him what happened. The Pope said: 'First I held up three fingers to represent the Trinity. He responded by holding up one finger to remind me that there was still one God common to both our religions. Then I waved my finger around me to show him, that God was all around us. He responded by pointing to the ground, showing that God was also right here with us. I pulled out the wine and the wafer to show that God absolves us from our sins. He pulled out an apple to remind me of original sin. He had an answer for everything. What could I do?'

Meanwhile, the Jewish community had crowded around Moishe, amazed that this old, almost feeble-minded man had done what all their scholars had insisted was impossible! 'What happened?' they asked. 'Well,' said Moishe, 'first he said to me that the Jews had three days to get out of here. I told him that not one of us was leaving. Then he told me that this whole city would be cleared of Jews. I let him know that we were staying right here.' 'And then?' asked a woman. 'I don't know,' Moishe shrugged. 'He took out his lunch and I took out mine.'

Last night I went to bed at 10:30, fell asleep quickly, got up once at 5:30, couldn’t fall back asleep, got up at 6am. I went back to bed at 7am and got up again at 8am, having only slept at most 30 minutes.

I left the apt at 9:30 and walked to the mall. On the way I saw police frisking a young man near the gas station. I said “hi” to Herman and he asked if Teresa was still selling the finca. I said “yes” and I told him I would give him her contact information next time I see him. Crossing Avenida Las Vegas I saw a long line of cars for people waiting to get vaccinated in the mall garage.

In Exito I bought an HP mouse that works with Windows 10 and a Belkin USB cable for recharging my cellphone. Near the entrance to the mall there is a recycling station where it appears they pay for plastic bottles. I had one with me so I added it to someone else’s collection.

In the mall I had coffee at Santa Leña. Victoria from Envios Market texted me that they will deliver my package today and the cost is 43,800 pesos. When I left I bought a bag of milk, 2 small cartons of eggs and lasagna pasta sheets in Exito. I returned to the apt by taxi in a light rain.

I put 44mil in an envelope and wrote Envios Market on the front and left it with the portero.

Teresa soon returned and made ground beef lasagna for lunch. Delicious! When Glenn returns she’s going to gift Glenn one and we’ll see if he wants to buy more. She left at 1:30 for a doctor’s appointment in downtown Medellin. I hope there won’t be any protests going on to inconvenience her.

I renewed my MagicJack service for another year for $39 (plus $3.51 administration fee plus $2.73 FL sales tax).

Teresa soon returned and told me the roads are closed because of the continuing protests.

I had my 2-hour chess lesson with Juan Castro. After, Teresa told me my package arrived at the porteria.

Again, it was like Christmas. The package included 2 finger pulse oximeters that Teresa wanted, my new black webbed belt, a New in Chess magazine, an American Chess magazine, my $1400 stimulus check (finally!), 3 new $2 bills from my brother (surprise!), and lots of annual legal notices and change of address acknowledgments from my pension companies.

I checkmated BrianEricMurphy in 29-moves increasing my rating to 1527.

Johns Hopkins’ 7-day average of new infections and deaths has the US with 22,999 ð 21,980 ð 21,104 new cases and 596 ð 485 ð 457 new deaths.

Medellin has 296,683 ð 298,526 ð 302,031 cases, an increase of 1,706 from May 28th to 29th. Envigado has a total of 24,478 cases, an increase of 103 from May 28th to 29th. The Medellin Guru website is back to normal. I just missed one day’s date.

Joke of the day

I went out on a blind date with a woman I met online. So I went to go pick her up. I wasn't expecting much, probably 300 lbs with bad skin.

I walked up to the door and lo and behold, 5'2", baby blue eyes, strawberry blonde hair, just gorgeous. I couldn't believe my luck. I asked her what she did for a living. She said she taught sunday school. Now I never had me a Christian girl, but I'm open minded so I took her to dinner.

On the way, I lit a joint and asked her if she puffs. "Oh heaven's no, what would I tell my Sunday school children?" I said okay, not everyone's idea of a good time.

I took her to the best restaurant I knew. I ordered the steak, she ordered the lobster. I asked for the second most expensive bottle of wine on the menu. When the waitress came to pour, she said she didn't drink. I said "you don't drink?!?" "Oh heaven's no, what would I tell my Sunday school children?"

Excellent food, sparkling conversation but i'm bummed out, I don't know what to do with a girl like this. So I'm driving her home and pass a cheap motel, I figure, what have I got to lose.

So i ask: "Wanna get a room and knock boots?" She says: "I thought you'd never ask!" I say: "Really? What are you gonna tell your Sunday school children?" She says: The same thing I tell them every week. You don't have to drink and do drugs to have a good time!"

Last night I went to bed at 10pm, fell asleep quickly, got up once at 4am, couldn’t fall back asleep, got up at 4:30, returned to bed at 5am, finally waking/getting up at 7am.

I left the apt at 8:15 for my walk but by the time I reached Marcos’ apt there were raindrops. Marcos thought it would get worse (it didn’t) so he cancelled walking for today and I returned to the apt.

Teresa called me after her gym class and suggested we go to Pricesmart. She took a taxi and I met her downstairs. When we arrived we each had a garden salad in their food court. We picked up 639mil of groceries including a box of 2 bags of Post’s Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds. Later she tried it, declared it too sweet so it must be for children, and asked me to help her finish it. 😊

Nobraskja texted me that I have a package but I didn’t read the message until too late for it to be delivered today.

I had a 45-minute nap in the afternoon.

Teresa beat me in parcheesi today 3 games to 2.

Of course we had a little rain in the evening.

Johns Hopkins’ 7-day average of new infections and deaths has the US with 23,162 ð 22,999 ð 21,980 new cases and 521 ð 596 ð 485 new deaths.

Medellin has 295,222 ð 296,683 ð 298,526 cases, an increase of 1,843 from May 26th to 27th. Envigado has a total of 24,304 cases, an increase of 98 from May 26th to 27th. I don’t know if I’m going to be able to provide Colombia’s statistics any longer because now Medellin Guru requires you to strain your eyes to solve one of those %&&% Captcha puzzles to prove you’re human.

Joke of the day

A man goes on a trip to the desert.  At one point he walks off alone and suddenly stumbles upon an old lamp. It’s old but might bring a little money so he rubs the lamp and is amazed when a genie pops out!

The genie says that he will grant the man only one wish and that he has to pick from three choices. He can either be the richest man in the world, the most popular man in the world, or the wisest man in the world.

The man says, “We all know that money does not bring happiness, and that popularity just makes you a slave to the whims of others, but wisdom is everlasting.  I want to be the wisest man in the world.”

The genie goes “poof” and suddenly the man’s face assumes a serene expression.  He sits down, rubbing his chin in thought.  He then looks toward the genie and says, “I should have taken the money”.

Thursday, May 27, 2021

Last night I went to bed at 10pm, fell asleep quickly, got up once at 4am (heard the rooster, still drizzling), couldn’t fall back asleep so I got up at 4:30, did some work on the computer, went back to bed at 5am, catnapped until getting up at 6am.

[Ed. It’s now Friday and I’m going to try to catch up with my blog.]

We left the apt at 7:30 for my 8:20 appointment with my urologist. Our taxi driver didn’t seem to know one of the direct routes to El Tesoro. Still we only arrived 3 minutes late and neither the doctor nor receptionist were there. Another older couple were there with an 8am appointment. About 5 minutes later the receptionist wheeled in Dr. Castano. (Had I mentioned he was in a wheelchair?) We went in about 20 minutes later after the other couple left.

The urologist confirmed that my bone scan was clean so my cancer was localized to my prostate. He confirmed I would be having laparoscopic prostatectomy surgery but it would not be robot-assisted. After the surgery I would still have to have PSA tests but I would no longer need to take my prostate meds and I should sleep better at night without an enlarged prostate squeezing my urethra.

He said recuperation would entail 1-2 nights stay in the hospital followed by 7-10 days convalescing at home. In 3-4 weeks I should be well enough to return to strenuous exercise including working out at the gym.

There is a 6-8% chance of urinary incontinence but most likely it would be a temporary condition and there is physical therapy that can lessen the condition.

I asked what hospital he is associated with and he said CES (Calle 58 & Carrera 50C) in the Prado sector of Medellin.

The receptionist wanted to schedule me for surgery this Monday, May 31st. I declined because I need to pay for the apt, etc. on Monday or Tuesday. She tentatively scheduled me for Thursday, June 10th. I understand it depends on the availability of the other doctors in the team. She gave Teresa a piece of paper with a list of things.

Google translated it to:

Urinalysis with sediment and urinary density.

Urine culture [disc antibiogram].

Prothrombin time [PT].

Partial thromboplastin time [PTT].

Hemogram [Hemoglobin, hematocrit and leukogram] manual method.

Creatinine in serum or other fluids.

Glucose in serum, CSF or other fluid other than urine.

It sounds like it’s just a blood and/or urine test. Teresa told me I need to have this done 5 days before my surgery. Not sure how that would be possible since the receptionist originally wanted me to have my surgery on Monday.

To be continued…

We went to Santa Lena where Teresa had eggs and a Milo and I had a café con leche and an almond croissant.

Teresa did some shopping at stores like Adidas, Puma, and Zara. She exchanged leggings in Puma. We were in no hurry because if we were in the apt we would probably be napping. We had lunch in J&C Delicias. After, while she went to Zara I went down to Carulla to have some notes printed. They no longer have a copy center but I was told I should go to Amilando on the 2nd floor. Walking to the back of the 2nd floor I asked a security guard where I could print some copies from my memory drive. He led me back the way I came and pointed to a store. I went inside and it looked like they had a color printer for some type of large pages. I asked and was told to go to Anillando deep on the 2nd floor. I passed the same security guard and asked him about Anillando and he took me to the kiosk. I printed the copies and returned to find Teresa outside Zara. We returned to Puma where she exchanged a top, plus 100,100 pesos for a pair of gym shoes. She wanted coffee so we went around the corner to Todo Fresa for coffee.

We left at 4:30 and we took a taxi back to the apt in a few raindrops.

At 6:45 Teresa asked me if I wanted to go for pizza. I asked her if she’s sure we will be back in time for her to see her favorite program Desafio which starts at 8pm. She said Gloria will put it on her TV if we are still there. I had her agree that we wouldn’t have to stay until the program was over. We picked up MT, first time I’ve seen her in glasses, and we went to Antica Pizza. I usually have vegetarian pizza but Teresa encouraged me to try something new so I had bacon with vegetables. There were a few raindrops as we left.

Johns Hopkins’ 7-day average of new infections and deaths has the US with 24,034 ð 23,162 ð 22,999 new cases and 534 ð 521 ð 596 new deaths.

Per Medellin Guru, as of this afternoon Colombia has a total of 3,270,614 ð 3,294,101 ð 3,319,913 cases with 85,666 ð 86,180 ð 86,693 deaths. Medellin has 295,222 ð 296,683 ð 298,526 cases, an increase of 1,843 from May 26th to 27th. Envigado has a total of 24,304 cases, an increase of 98 from May 26th to 27th.

Joke of the day

On our commute to work, my husband stopped at a convenience store for coffee.  As he got back into the car, I noticed something odd.  “Turn your head and look at me,” I said.  “You have a Q-tip sticking out of your ear.”

As he pulled it out, he replied, “No wonder the guy in there asked me if I was getting good reception.”

Wednesday, May 26, 2021

Last night I went to bed at 10pm, fell asleep quickly, got up once at midnight, again at 2am, and finally woke/got up at 5:15.

We left the apt just after 6am and arrived at the San Diego Clinic of Opthamology at 6:30. I paid 239mil ($64) for the more sophisticated eye exam. In the 2nd waiting room we were finally taken in at 7:45. My ophthalmologist, Dr. Montoya, was there and she gave me an exam in their more sophisticated machine where I didn’t need to have my pupils dilated first. After 5 minutes she said my cornea looks healthy.

I told her about my prostate adenocarcinoma and that I would probably be going in for surgery in the coming weeks but I would like to get my eye fixed first so anything she could do to accelerate my appointments would be appreciated. She told me she doesn’t know what my eye problem is and may not find out so I should not wait for her and just go ahead with my other surgery.

Since I didn’t have my pupils dilated we proceeded, as I had promised, to walk over to Premium Plaza mall so she could check out Zara. Problem was the stores don’t open until 10am and it was only 8:15. 😊 I had coffee and a couple bunuelos at Supreme Bunuelos and she had a couple eggs and a Milo (local chocolate drink). Outside we quickly caught a taxi back to the apt. I understood Teresa and the taxi driver were talking about protests in Parque Poblado and Parque Envigado.

We went right to bed and I slept from 9:30 to 11:15. Teresa got up 30 minutes later.

Teresa called my urologist and my next appointment isn’t tomorrow it’s next Thursday, June 3rd at 11am.

Now I have to try to translate the directions from last night so I can see my bone test results. It turned out to be pretty easy retrieving my results from their website after Teresa told me my cedula number is my password. Via Google Translate:

INDICATION: Patient diagnosed with prostate cancer.

TECHNIQUE: Anterior and posterior whole body scanning and special imaging are performed after the intravenous administration of 20mCi of 99mTc-MDP.

FINDINGS: In the acquired images, no pathological deposits of the radiopharmaceutical are observed that suggest metastatic bone lesions of the reparative type. Only osteodegenerative inflammatory processes in shoulders, handlebars sternal, L5-S1.

CONCLUSION: Negative study for reparative metastatic bone lesions.

Negative, in a medical sense, is usually good news! 😊

Per the internet, “Technetium 99m-methyl diphosphonate (99mTc MDP) is a radiotracer used in nuclear medicine especially for bone scintigraphy. Any disease process which results in extracellular fluid expansion will lead to accumulation of this tracer.”

And my brother helped me correct the translation of “handlebars sternal” to “sternum”.

Teresa was on the phone with someone ordering materials to repair the finca patio but afterward she found they don’t have anyone to deliver them. It appears everyone is afraid to have their truck on the road during the protests as it might get torched.

Teresa told me she’s going to call my urologist to see what time my appointment is tomorrow. I told her “you said it’s next Thursday”. She then tells me that was for my eye doctor. (She never did say which doctor she just gave me a date and time for my next appointment.) She called my urologist and found that my appointment tomorrow is at 8:15.

Early afternoon: something’s going on. We usually don’t have so much traffic on our street and it’s even backed up. Later I realized traffic was being diverted from Avenida Las Vegas because protesters were walking down the street.

And then it got real windy and the temperature dropped meaning we’ll probably have rain soon. That sure isn’t going to help the traffic. No rain developed.

Teresa beat me in parcheesi today 3 games to 0. Damn I hate when that happens.

Teresa wanted something different for supper tonight. I told her I would order from Frisby only if they allow me to order a Frichuleta. She told me she wanted a chicken burger from McDonald’s. I tried several times to order using my debit card but it always told me something didn’t work right. I then tried ordering using cash but that didn’t work either. A few minutes later Teresa received a call from the portero that McDonald’s was here with our order. After she hung up I asked her if I’m supposed to pay in cash. She hadn’t asked. I checked my checking account real quick and there was no McDonald’s charge so I went down and paid in cash.

The evening news reported that Colombia reached a record high today in new Covid-19 infections.

It was about 7pm when I noticed the streets were wet. Another day I think we didn’t get over 82 degrees.

Teresa came back from a trip to the garbage chute and reported a couple of 12-year-olds were in the stairwell kissing.

I put new batteries in the new mouse but that cheap piece of %&*$ doesn’t work. Looks like soon I’ll be making a trip to Monterrey Mall.

Johns Hopkins redesigned their website so it’s no longer showing total infections it’s showing 7-day averages so I changed too. The US has 24,034 ð 23,162 new cases and 534 ð 521 deaths.

Per Medellin Guru, as of this afternoon Colombia has a total of 3,249,433 ð 3,270,614 ð 3,294,101 cases with 85,207 ð 85,666 ð 86,180 deaths. Medellin has 294,125 ð 295,222 ð 296,683 cases, an increase of 1,456 from May 25th to 26th. Envigado has a total of 24,206 cases, an increase of 98 from May 25th to 26th.

Joke of the day

My boss arrived to work in a brand-new Lamborghini.  “Wow,” I said. “That’s an amazing car.”

He replied, “If you work hard, put all your hours in, and strive for excellence, I’ll get another one next year.”

Tuesday, May 25, 2021

Last night I went to bed at 10:30, fell asleep quickly, got up once at 5am, gave up getting back to sleep so I got up at 5:15.

I went back to bed at 6am, finally fell back asleep getting up at 7:30 just as Teresa was leaving for her gym class.

I left the apt at 9am and walked to the mall. I had my usual breakfast at Habia Una Vez, printed some chess notes at Auros, bought 4 AAA Energizer batteries at Home Center and had coffee at Santa Leña. Teresa called me at noon and told me she would be at the beauty parlor until 4pm so I should not wait for her for lunch. I had a Whopper at Burger King then bought eggs and milk in Exito and returned to the apt by taxi.

We left the apt at 4:30 for my 5:15 appointment in the Cedimed building on Calle 7. Of course we arrived a little early. I paid 386,100 ($102) with my debit card for a Skeletal Scintigraphy (bone scan) and was asked to scan something with directions as to how to see my test results, in Spanish of course. At 5:45 a phlebotomist gave me an injection in my arm and told us to go get something to eat and come back at 7:30. The usual nearby café/restaurants were all closed. We walked down to Avenida Poblado where we saw a Crepes & Waffles across the street. I had the chicken curry with a mango juice and Teresa had a turkey salad. For dessert we shared a bowl of vanilla ice cream with hot chocolate sauce. The bill came to 61mil ($17) including tip and tax. We were back at the clinic just before 7:30. I changed into the usual hospital garb in this tiny closet, Teresa stored them in this little locker and we returned to the waiting room. Finally, about 8:15 my name was called and I went into the procedure room. The technician had me lie down on this hard gurney and my hands touched the table and was I cold. The technician had me put my arms through this belt that then kept them from touching the cold surface. Then she rolled me under this machine. About 2-3 inches above my face were these incomplete crosshairs. I thought if this thing comes any closer to my face I’ll scream. Just before I went in I remembered the nurse telling Teresa 20 minutes. Twenty minutes of this claustrophobia isn’t going to be easy. I closed my eyes and tried to think of a better place. After about 5 minutes the machine seemed to slowly move down my body, actually my body moved slowly out from under the machine. Then she had me raise my arms over my head and I was scanned again but this time I wasn’t any further under than mid chest.

It was a little uncomfortable getting off the thing because of the osteoarthritis in my lower back. I slowly changed back into my street clothes and we left. I was walking very gingerly because my back was in a little pain. We walked down the street and finally caught a taxi back to the apt.My back was feeling better after we got out of the taxi.

Tomorrow morning I have a 7:30am eye exam.

I see Johns Hopkins redesigned their website so it’s no longer showing total infections it’s showing 7-day averages so I’m going to have to change too. The US has 24,034 new cases and 534 deaths.

Per Medellin Guru, as of this afternoon Colombia has a total of 3,232,456 ð 3,249,433 ð 3,270,614 cases with 84,724 ð 85,207 ð 85,666 deaths. Medellin has 292,941 ð 294,125 ð 295,222 cases, an increase of 1,095 from May 24th to 25th. Envigado has a total of 24,108 cases, an increase of 35 from May 24th to 25th.

Joke of the day

The Lone Ranger was ambushed and captured by an indian war party. Sneering, the chief says, "So, YOU are the great Lone Ranger. Well, in honor of our Harvest Festival, you will be burned at the stake in three days. But, before I kill you, I will grant you 3 requests. What is your first request”?
The Lone Ranger responds, "I'd like to speak to my horse."

The chief nods and Silver is brought before the Lone Ranger who whispers in Silver's ear. Galvanized, the horse gallops away.
Later that evening, Silver returns with a beautiful blonde woman on his back. As the Indian chief watches, the blonde enters the Lone Ranger's tent and spends the night.

The next morning the Indian Chief admits that he's impressed. "You have a very fine and loyal horse,
but I will still kill you in two days. What is your
second request”?

The Lone Ranger again asks to speak to his horse. Once again, Silver is brought to him, and again he whispers in the horse's ear. Silver paws the air, gallops away, and soon disappears over the horizon.
Later that evening, to the chief's surprise, Silver again returns, this time with a voluptuous brunette, even more attractive than the blonde. She too enters the Lone Ranger’s tent and spends the night.

The following morning the indian chief is again impressed.
"You are indeed a man of many talents, but you will still die tomorrow. What is your last request”?
A pained Lone Ranger answers, "I'd like to speak to my horse… alone. The chief is curious, but he agrees.
Silver is once more led to the Lone Ranger's tent.

Once they're alone, the Lone Ranger grabs Silver by both ears, looks him square in the eyes, and says, Listen Very Carefully!!! For the last time, I said, bring POSSE"!
