In The News: Attempted assassination of Miguel Uribe Turbay, 39 years old, a member of the Centro Democratico party, member of the Senate since 2022 and grandson of former president Julio César Turbay Ayala.
Miguel Uribe Turbay, was 5 years old when his mother Diana Turbay, a journalist was kidnapped and killed by Pablo Escobar and the Medellín cartel.
In the fascinating book, News of A Kidnapping, famed Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez recounts the 1990 kidnappings of ten individuals including Diana Turbay. Highly recommended reading.
What is known, so far
A 15 year old teenager was apprehended on the scene with a glock who declared that he did it for the money.
The Colombian authorities should be able to convince the 15 year old teenager to speak, point fingers and hopefully give up the individuals who hired him.
There is video footage of the shooter speaking with a woman in the crowd before the incident. In addition, the footage shows other men and women in the crowd with their attention focused on the woman and teenager speaking during the speech and a man standing a few feet away from Miguel Uribe who gives the signal when to shoot, excellent footage, all will be easily identified with time.
There's plenty of raw video footage from different angles taken by bystanders on their cell phones.
Update, Monday June 9: The woman in the video turned herself into the authorities alongside her attorney.
Miguel Uribe underwent surgery and is in critical condition.
The Colombian authorities will spare no resources in an attempt to identify and apprehend those responsible for organizing the attempted assassination.
