According to weekly Semana, Congress was supposed to convene on Wednesday, but the sessions were canceled because most lawmakers failed to show up.
Colombia’s senators and house representatives decided to not organize another debate until Wednesday next week, a day after the game against Argentina.
Admittedly, the game against Argentina is key to Colombia’s classification for the 2018 World Cup in Russia after “Los Cafeteros” lost against Uruguay.
However, with Wednesday’s cancellation of the plenary session of the Senate in effect gives the 102 senators a full workweek to prepare mentally for the game, almost as much as the national team has to physically and mentally prepare for the match.
The persistent absence of lawmakers and their consequent incapacity to timely pass laws has already forced Congress President Luis Fernando Velasco to fine some of his colleagues.
But the $100 fine apparently didn’t hurt the congressmen’s wallet enough for them to attend the job they were elected for.
