ACCIDENT AT EL PENOL (AKA THE ROCK)

 

Several tourists were injured after a landslide in Piedra del Peñol, in Antioquia

15 people injured. That is the balance left by the detachment of rock material from one side of the Piedra del Peñol. This tourist site is located in Guatapé, Antioquia. Due to what happened, the area is closed and cordoned off by the department’s National Police. Most of the injured people are tourists and have already been treated by the authorities. According to statements made by Colonel Carlos Martínez, commander of the Antioquia Police in Blu Radio, There was a lateral fall in the stone that “generated a fall of material and caused injuries to fifteen tourists who were in the place”.

According to the information that has been obtained, The relief agencies that are attending to this emergency gave the order to evacuate people. All those who were visiting the stone were removed as a precaution.

Several tourists did their best to leave the site. This is because they did not want to expose their life or physical integrity in the place.

Of the 15 people who were injured by the lateral rock fall, six of them were treated at the same site. Nevertheless, The remaining nine were transferred to the nearest healthcare centers. This was so that they could be cared for in the best way and the wounds caused by the rock fall of El Peñol would be treated.

The Peñol stone is one of the most visited sites by international and Colombian tourists in the department of Antioquia. Its current name is the Peñon de Guatapé and it is a 220-meter-high monolith that has been one of the favorite attractions for visitors every day. It is located in the municipality of Guatapé, Antioquia, about 75 kilometers from the capital of the department (Medellín). on a journey that can last up to two hours.

This is the only large stone that has stairs inserted to climb it to the top. It has 715 steps and at the top it has bathrooms and several commercial premises suitable for tourists. dAt this time, the authorities continue working to clarify the facts.
